Overall Objectives of Position
The Cultural Educator plans and teaches cultural activities and cultural special events to any and all groups. The Cultural Educator also handles scheduling of educational cultural programs for Fred L McGhee classes and Boys & Girls Club. . This job description is not an all-inclusive list of the duties and responsibilities of this position. The Cultural Educator is expected to perform all duties and responsibilities necessary to meet the goals and objectives of applicable programs. The Cultural Educator is expected to live the Purpose and Values of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and will go beyond the call of duty.

Primary Responsibilities of the Cultural Educator
  • Assist with planning of Princess Contests, chaperones, and teaches the reigning princesses cultural activities throughout the year.
  • Works with the Planning and Events Coordinator, Fred L McGhee classes, Boys & Girls Club, and Teen Center in teaching/contracting cultural activities/classes for the Pow Wow Club, Fred L McGhee Program, Boys & Girls Club, Tribal Youth Council, Teen Center, and other cultural programs.
  • Prepares lesson plans and instructional material (which includes trips) on a monthly basis for cultural classes and provides schedule of lessons/activities monthly.
  • Gives cultural demonstrations and presentations to educational groups and any other request that has been presented to the department.
  • Creates material for Cultural awareness days and distributes throughout the Community and also make groups aware of special designated days throughout Indian Country.
  • Assists with the planning, developing, advertising, and evaluation of existing and new cultural programs and events for the community.
  • Assists Cultural Department Staff in executing specific events, functions, and programs. • Works with Tribal Departments and entities to make their programs, functions, and events culturally relevant.
  • Tracks and inventories all supplies and property purchased through Cultural Education programs and designated programs overseen by the Cultural Educator and submits reports to the Director-Cultural on a quarterly basis.
  • Maintains appropriate program budgets.
  • Acts a confidant and a mentor to young people and serves as a role model for the children and youth of the community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate person.
Day-to-day Responsibilities

Education/License/Certification and Experience Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have one (1) year of employment experience working with young children.
  • Two (2) years of verifiable related employment experience with cultural programs and/or history preferred.
  • Must possess certification of “Mandatory Reporter Training” or obtain during the first week of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain First Aid/CPR certification or obtain within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Must possess certification of “ServSafe Training” or obtain within thirty (30) days of employment.
Skills Required
  • Absolute confidentiality.
  • Must be extremely knowledgeable in Native American Culture, especially Poarch Creek culture. Must successfully pass a culture test.
  • Knowledge in Poarch Creek Cultural Arts preferred.
  • Must have working knowledge of computers with the ability to work in a Windows environment with various software programs such as Word, Excel, etc. Must successfully pass applicable knowledge skills, and abilities exam.
  • Ability to work well independently and to relate effectively with the public.
  • Must be able to work with all age groups including but not limited to children (Evenstart, Boys & Girls Club, Pow Wow Club) and Elders.
  • Able to handle challenging situations in a positive manner.
  • Able to understand interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Skilled and mature in making valid judgements, demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities, and balance diverse projects.
  • Ability to provide all visiting guest/vendors with superior customer service and provide any assistance when needed.
  • Must be people oriented and relate well to people from diverse backgrounds.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to work odd and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Required to work all cultural events sponsored by the Cultural Department.
  • Ability to serve as a chaperone for Tribal Youth Council, Pow Wow Club, and others in cultural programs.
  • Must successfully pass the required criminal and character check.
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and an insurable driving record according to Tribal insurance guidelines.
  • Ability to travel and participate in required training, leadership development, and other events.
  • Ability to adequately and successfully perform all duties and responsibilities of this position.
