Early Childhood Learning Center - Nurse

MISSION & VISION STATEMENT:

The Kewa Pueblo Health Corporation (KPHC) is established for the purposes of carrying out the vision and mission of the Santo Domingo Health Center (SDHC). POSITION PURPOSE:

The Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC) Nurse is responsible for managing and coordinating the Santo Domingo services based on requirements established by the Office of Head Start Performance Standards and the KPHC. The ECLC Nurse ensures comprehensive delivery of health and nutrition services to the ECLC program participants. The ECLEC Nurse will report to the Director of Outpatient Nursing or designee and will work with related departments on ensuring that patient care issues are addressed during the designated shift. Facilitates the team concept in the decision-making process and assures compliance with the Health Center-wide Performance Improvement/Quality Assurance Program and client process improvements.

PERFOMANCE EXPECTATIONS:

In performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees of the Kewa Pueblo Health Center are expected to conform to the following:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health program according to nursing standards of practice.
  • Maintains communicable disease prevention and control measures and in some instances administers immunizations to protect students and others in accordance with state and local health department regulations and district policies and department protocol.
  • Provides episodic and emergency health care to ill or injured students/employees.
  • Effectively triage patients.
  • Prepares paperwork to help route children to medical, dental, behavioral health, and/or social services, so each child can achieve optimum academic and social development, if needed.
  • Assess the health and developmental status of students through the performance of each student’s evaluation and health appraisals.
  • Provides clinical and/or administrative documentation in Electronic Health Records for all services provided, as required.
  • Provides availability to students and parents for education-related purposes outside of the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms, if needed.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct health and administrative records as required by law, agency policy, and/or administrative regulations.
  • Maintains health related inventory.
  • Uses appropriate measures to request needed materials and supplies.
  • Assists secretary in submitting monthly reimbursement claims including, but not limited to, clinical claims within the Electronic Health Records, if needed.
  • Coordinates with the cooks and nutrition employees to help ensure a well-balanced diet for the students.
  • Assists teachers in instructing students in health and nutrition education.
  • Facilitates continuity of care by involving the patient and family in the development of the plan for ongoing care.
  • Performs patient and family education based on established standards as required by age of patient, and documents education in Electronic Health Records.
  • Recognizes the dignity or worth of individuals, respects cultural, spiritual and psychosocial differences and apply philosophical and ethical concepts that promotes equality and continuity of care.

MINIMUM MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:


  • Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Nursing, or Diploma in Practical Nursing, from an accredited nursing program (CCNE/ACEN), or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
  • Current and unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of New Mexico or multi-state license privilege as provided in the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Experience:

  • Minimum one (1) year nursing experience and experience in community health or public health, pediatrics, emergency care and triage, psychiatry, and/or a physician’s office preferred.

Certification:


  • Must have current CPR/First Aid Instructor’s Certification at the time of hire.
  • Must obtain a food handler’s certificate within seven (7) days of hire.

Mandatory Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of best nursing practices in general and for pediatrics.
  • Knowledge of community agencies to help students and their families.
  • Knowledge of Santo Domingo Early Childhood Learning Center’s services and their policies and procedures.
  • Proficient at taking vital signs and administering medication, accordingly.
  • Skills in effective and professional communication techniques, including writing and speaking.
  • Possess knowledge in stress management and crisis management.
  • A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with the mandatory reporting requirements under the Indian Child Protection Act.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Prior experience working with Indian Health Services (IHS), a Tribe or Tribal organization.
  • Bilingual skills in English and the Keres native language.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:


The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the primary functions of this job. Normal office conditions exist, and the noise level in the work environment can vary from low to moderate. Travel during the daytime, as well as limited overnight travel may be required from time to time. This position may expose the incumbent to certain health risks that are inherent when working within a health center facility.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to frequently stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, talk and hear. There may be prolonged periods of sitting, keyboarding, reading, as well as driving or riding in transport vehicles. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include reading, distance, computer, and color vision. Talking and hearing are essential to communicate with patients, vendors and staff.

MENTAL DEMANDS:


There are a number of deadlines associated with this position. The employee must also multi-task and interact with a wider variety of people on various and, at times, complicated issues.
