About this job
Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe's growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms.
High-Throughput Transformation Operations team: Our mission is to provide fast, efficient, and scalable construction of novel microbial strains to support the Ginkgo Foundry's projects and experiments across a range of organisms. As the name suggests, we focus on Transformation (introduction of novel DNA sequence into a cell) at High Throughput (processing many samples at once using state-of-the-art software and automation), in an Operations framework (prioritizing efficient process and consistent output).
Operations Engineer 1, Transformation (Weekend):
As an Operations Engineer, you are responsible for executing several high throughput strain engineering protocols, across yeast and bacterial organisms. You will work independently in the automated lab to fulfill transformation batch requests, as well as collaborating with the team to troubleshoot the process and avoid disruptions or delays. After getting comfortable delivering on these requests, you will have opportunities to partner with Ginkgo's Build Engineers to contribute to continuous process improvement via experimentation, and to platform expansion as new organisms and methods are onboarded.
Please note: We are currently in need of weekend support, so this role requires the willingness and availability to consistently work a shift including Saturday and/or Sunday (for example, 5x8hr, Thurs-Mon, or 4x10hr, Sat-Tues). After your first year, a move to a weekday-only schedule is possible.
Responsibilities:
- Learn and execute SOPs for the following:
- plasmid transformation
- genomic DNA integration
- colony picking
- culturing and propagating yeast and bacteria
- Utilize and understand several state of the art automation systems for liquid handling and sample processing
- Effectively execute and deliver on request batches assigned by the team lead with minimal supervision or oversight
- Work collaboratively with teammates to diagnose issues experienced during production runs and to carry out any necessary rework, including troubleshooting of automation systems
- Contribute to the lab operational improvements through inventory management, 5S, and other methodologies
- Ensure operational excellence by communicating developments to team members across shifts
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in microbiology, molecular biology, biotechnology or related field
- At least 1 year of operations experience in industry or at least 1 year of academic research experience (can be part-time) outside of required undergraduate coursework
- Available for a consistent schedule that will include Saturday and/or Sunday
- High attention to detail with the ability to perform in a fast paced environment
Preferred Capabilities and Experiences:
- Experience culturing microbes and engineering microbes
- Experience with experimental design and analysis
- Familiarity with automated liquid handling and with a range of microbial transformation methodologies (Hamilton, K8 Colony Picker)
