Senior Division Manager, Rod Mill

The Position: The Senior Division Manager, Rod Mill has complete responsibility for operation and maintenance of high-speed rolling and rod mill in order to meet established cost and production goals. This role will oversee the Rolling and Rod Mills through subordinate supervisors engaged in a wide variety of work, including reheat furnace, billet yard, roughing, intermediate, finishing mills, rod block, water boxes, laying head and cooling conveyor, coil reforming, down ending, compacting, weighing, and tagging equipment, finished stock warehousing, rod inventory, and shipping operations pertaining to coiled reinforcement bars, wire rods, smooth rounds, and other related steel products such as: squares, flats, and angles.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and cooperate with all departments and personnel on all matters of mutual concern or interrelated responsibility.
  • Advise and instruct subordinates as to objectives or regarding any problems of schedules, methods, standards, materials, quality, shipping, equipment, tooling, safety, cost, discipline, personnel policies, physical testing, or other matters affecting operation of the mill or shipments.
  • Make related decisions within established policy and precedent.
  • Responsible for team process, through training assignments, follow up and positive approach to teamwork and self-responsibility through subordinate supervisors and their people.
  • Establish work schedules, recommends capital expenditures, mill modifications and design changes for improved efficiency.
  • Responsible for the supervision and direction of rolling and rod mill maintenance, engineering and machine repair operations and procedures, through staff engineers, subordinate supervisors engaged in a wide variety of maintenance, repair shop, store keeping, janitorial service, construction, and associated activities.
  • Establish preventive and breakdown maintenance programs.
  • Responsible for all maintenance on mill stands, rod mill equipment, guides, rolls, repeaters and electrical systems, etc.
  • Maintain inventory of operational and maintenance parts and supplies such as switches, motors, rolls, guides, etc.
  • Coordinate with Division Controller in order to maintain inventory. Responsible for inventory records and security.
  • Responsible for quality control personnel who inspect, check, and test product to ensure quality standards meet customer specifications and ASTM requirements. Also responsible for managing, warehousing, loading and shipment of finished product inventory.
  • Anticipate or investigate delays, inadequate work performance and take necessary corrective action within limits of established practices. Check work in process, as necessary, for conformance to standards and recommendations to meet changing requirements. Investigate and recommend cost controls. Recommend products, ideas or improvements to increase return on capital invested. Make recommendations to incentive standards and controls.

Safety:

  • Provide full support for the implementation and management of Safety In area of responsibility.
  • Participate in all Major and Serious accident/incident investigations.
  • Provide necessary training and tools to supervisory personnel to administer Safety In Action system.
  • Participate in routine safety activities including PPO's, Layered Audits, visibility tours and safety meetings.
  • Ensure that work rules are posted in all work areas.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Attain predetermined production goals.
  • Establish standard rolling practices for control of production methods, quality, budgets, manpower and cost.
  • Establish preventive maintenance program and breakdown priorities.
  • Establish and administer department rules for safety, discipline and work procedures within corporate guidelines.
  • Requisition operating parts and supplies to ensure availability of the proper quantity and quality when needed.
  • Select, train, evaluate, discipline and motivate personnel.
  • Cooperate with other supervisors and departments to maintain coordinated efficiency of operation.
  • Responsible for departmental housekeeping.
  • Administer team process with assigned goals and follow-up.
  • Responsible for quality inspections and testing of finished product.

Requirements:

  • Education and experience equivalent to an Engineering degree.
  • 10-15 years' experience with high-speed rolling operations in rod mill management and procedures.
  • Additional experience/knowledge of maintenance and quality.
