Position Type / Expected Hours of Work:

This is a seasonal position that works on average 20-29 hours a week, any day of the week (Monday through Sunday). Additional hours may be required. This is a variable hour position and schedule will change based on camp reservations at the discretion of the Director of Camp Services and/or CEO.

Summary:

The Camp Food Service Cook is responsible for providing meals to campers and staff during various summer camp programs, as well as the cleaning and organization of the kitchen/appliances. During down times, additional assistance throughout the camp job site may be required.

Essential Functions:

This is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of job functions. This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by this employee. The employee is required to follow any other instructions, and to perform any other duties, as assigned.

The essential functions of this position include:

  • Coordinate with Director of Camp Services regarding staff in the kitchen; work cooperatively to assure the safety of all employees.
  • Direct supervision of dish washers; oversee and coordinate the activities of the dish washing staff to ensure adequate levels of plates, cutlery, serving dishes, etc. are available as needed.
  • Primarily responsible for the organization and storage of food and food supplies; coordinate with the Director of Camp Services to ensure all supplies are fully stocked and re-ordered in a timely fashion as to not run out of any critical items.
  • Preparation and final presentation of all required meals for camp program participants and staff; ensure the overall quality of prepared and served food.
  • Oversee the distribution of food to participants and staff; coordinate portion controls to ensure all applicable individuals have received proper nourishment.
  • Oversee, and assist with as available, the cleaning of plates, utensils, pots, pans, and any other items used in the preparation and consumption of daily meals and/or snacks; coordinate the disposal of all waste.
  • Primarily responsible for the maintenance of the kitchen and dining area(s); keep areas safe and conduct all operations in accordance with applicable health codes, rules, contracted partner requirements, food nutrition guidelines, and legislation pertaining to food preparation.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of all food preparation, storage, serving, and consumption areas in order to eliminate pests and unwarranted waste.
  • Report all mechanical problems and/or maintenance concerns to the Director of Camp Services and/or Maintenance as needed.

Education/Talent Requirements:

  • The ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematics at, or near, a high school level in order to assist with planning, supply control, and operational budget constraints, is required.
  • Must have the ability to work respectfully and courteously with a wide variety of individuals, including individuals with disabilities.

Work Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum three years’ experience in institutional cooking, including experience in meal planning and preparation, is preferred.
  • Central Registry Clearance mandatory; clearance check will be performed by Pioneer Resources.

Travel:

No travel is required for this position; however, daily commute to Pioneer Trails camp work-site is required (1421 E Fruitvale Rd, Holton, MI 49425). Must have reliable transportation to and from work-site in personal vehicle.

Work Environment:

This employee usually works in a camp kitchen environment, but may be required to perform job duties outside of this typical setting. Camp is located in a wooded area on Blue Lake. Although the majority of tasks are performed in an indoor setting, outdoor duties may be required. Exposure to outdoor elements, seasonal temperatures, and various natural pests, should be expected and tolerable. Temperatures higher than normal indoor settings should also be expected while cooking appliances, such as ovens, are in use. Moderate to loud noises while preparing, serving and observing the consumption of meals/snacks is to be expected. Must have the ability to work in a confined area. This position works in close proximity to people.

Physical Demands of the Job:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to, stand, walk, sit, stoop, bend, lift, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers in the application various tasks. May be required to reach, stoop, bend, or lift for extended periods of time in order to complete required duties. Occasional light lifting up to 50 lbs may be expected. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures for budgetary compliance, reviewing and understanding nutritional and dietary requirements for various campers and staff and other various visual inspection requirements.
