Materials Science/Failure Analysis Engineer
Job Description:
This role will be part of a cross-functional team concentrating on development,
characterization, and failure analysis of next generation batteries, materials and
products.
The key responsibilities of the position are conducting sample preparation, operating
analytical instruments and analyzing data under the direction of senior engineers.
We are looking for someone who is innovative, has a material testing experience and
has a willingness to dive deep into complex issues. The candidate must have
experience with DSC, hardness testing, surface topography analysis, scratch testing,
indentation, acoustic microscopy, light microscopy, and techniques such as gas
chromatography and ion chromatography.
Description:
Conduct sample preparation for analysis by a variety of analytical techniques. The
techniques may involve unit tear down, gas analysis from batteries, hardness testing of
softer/harder materials, weighing materials on balances, water/solvent extractions,
preparing solutions using scientific glassware, manipulating small objects under
microscopes, etc.
- Hands on extensive experience with hardness testers, scratch testing, indentation,
acoustic microscopy, light microscopy, DSC, digital microscopes
- Experience in organic molecules and materials
- Some experience in ion chromatography and gas chromatography
- Data analysis and reporting abilities (Keynote, Pages, Numbers, Excel, PowerPoint)
Eduction/Experience:
- Hold a B.S. in science or engineering with knowledge of chemistry
- Have experience working in a lab setting
- Knowledge of safe lab practices

- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability when accepting new tasks
- Manage shifting priorities and complete tasks to meet deadlines
- Respond to direction and independently execute tasks
- Ability to communicate and understand technical information
- Maintain attention to detail, e.g., traceability of samples, manipulating small
quantities of materials
- Take a hands-on approach to problem solving
- Ability to collaboratively get work done
