Position Summary
Conducts routine and advanced daily, annual and problematic mechanical maintenance and preventive maintenance; repairs various new and existing mechanical and chemical equipment, systems, appliances and other related structures for the Water Reclamation Plant of the Service Authority. Conducts testing, rebuilds, overhauls and/or replaces related mechanical equipment as needed. Provides project and daily guidance, training and mentoring to ES and WR Levels I and II Maintenance Mechanics.
Position Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions
  • Performs routine and advanced daily, annual and preventive mechanical maintenance, repairs various new and existing mechanical and chemical equipment and systems (including those that use hazardous chemicals) including, but not limited to, blowers, pumps (cake, screw feeder, ash, etc.), centrifuge,HVAC, odor control, chemical feed, channel grinder, mixers, incinerators, and or other related equipment as instructed by written SOP manuals including, but not limited to, visual inspections; packing; adjusting; lubing; checking bolts, alarms, fluids (oil, coolant, fuel, etc.); cleaning/changing filters and coils; disabling chargers; clearances; tightening/replacing belts and chains; etc.
  • Provides daily guidance, training and mentoring to ES and WR Level I and II Maintenance Mechanics on proper procedures for fixing common faulty equipment.
  • May provide input and/or conduct Mechanic I and Mechanic II employee performance evaluations.
  • Provides leadership on special projects.
  • Identifies and troubleshoots complicated problems with all related faulty equipment at the Water Reclamation Plant.
  • Brainstorms ideas/solutions and fixes/implements changes related to faulty systems and equipment problems to ensure efficiency and performance of equipment.
  • Documents all maintenance on equipment.
  • Performs extensive maintenance and troubleshooting on pumps including but not limited to, installing mechanical seals; setting up pumps with vibration analysis, laser alignments, etc., overhauling/rebuilding; analyzing complicated pumping functional problems; and pulling equipment out of pump stations.
  • Rebuilds and/or replaces blowers.
  • Tests and/or replaces Reduced Pressure Zone backflow preventers.
  • Rebuilds and/or replaces pressure systems.
  • Replaces HVAC shafts and shaft bearings.
  • Overhauls and/or rebuilds incinerators as needed.
  • Performs welding duties as assigned.
  • Provides detailed analysis of equipment and follow up to preventive maintenance.
  • Adjusts mechanical equipment as needed.
  • Assesses and analyzes the working condition and performance readings/levels of mechanical equipment and systems; identifies advanced problems; and troubleshoots and brainstorms ideas/solutions to advanced problems.
  • Creates work orders and orders parts.
  • Disconnects, connects and rewires electrical wiring as needed while maintaining SA buildings and appliances.
  • Assesses, conducts and directs ES and WR Level I and II Maintenance Mechanics on work on SA structural building repairs and replacement work on roof, floors, stairs, plumbing, fans, etc.; and in equipment rebuilding/replacing process.
  • Identifies faulty mechanical equipment and/or system problems.
  • Works closely with other Mechanics on daily work assignments, projects and tasks.
  • Reads expanded blueprints of mechanical equipment and assembles and reassembles equipment as needed.
  • Writes general notes regarding daily maintenance work using the CMMS system and responds to emails.
  • Utilizes different equipment specific tools as needed.
  • Preps sites for safety based on types of tasks and utilizes appropriate advanced safety precautions as required (i.e. guidelines found on SDS, safety glasses, ear protection, hard hat, etc.).
  • Maintains chemical levels on equipment as needed.
  • May be deemed essential at any time.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience:
  • Possesses advanced technical knowledge of mechanical equipment such as blowers, pumps (cake, screw feeder, chemical feed, etc.), centrifuge, HVAC, odor control, chemical systems, channel grinder, mixers, incinerators, and other related equipment and systems.
  • Ability to demonstrate advanced working knowledge of, and skills working with various mechanical equipment and systems and their internal components including but not limited to, pumps (cake, screw feeder, chemical feed, etc.), HVAC,, chemical feeds, blowers, centrifuges, incinerators, channel grinders, odor controls, and/or other related equipment.
  • Possesses advanced knowledge of hydraulics, flows, pressure reads, etc. as well as specific tools such as those needed to assemble and reassemble systems and equipment.
  • Ability to assess and troubleshoot all related faulty, inefficient equipment (including related complex/new equipment), analyze elements affected by all problems and offer and implement complex solutions.
  • Ability to replace pre-air blowers and rebuild chemical pumps; and overhaul wastewater plant equipment.
  • Ability to identify related materials and equipment such as fans, ash pumps, wet scrubbers, fuel injectors, etc.
  • Ability to offer detailed instruction, guidance and mentoring to ES and WR Level I and II Maintenance Mechanics on projects and daily work assignments; recommends replacement of equipment or processes necessary in preparing annual budget.
  • Ability to perform welding practices.
  • Possesses advanced construction and structural repair knowledge.
  • Possesses an understanding of the combination and interaction of equipment associated with incinerators (i.e., pumps, meters, blowers, removal equipment (ash, fuel pumps, water sprays) and analytical equipment).
  • Ability to utilize various equipment including but not limited to, bearing presses, band saws, etc.
  • Possesses and demonstrates advanced knowledge of PM on new mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to focus on small details.
  • Possesses advanced knowledge of pumps (types, materials used to make them, operational expectations, components and sizing options).
  • Ability to demonstrate advanced plumbing skills including, but not limited to, glue fittings, copper sweating copper and threaded fittings.
  • Ability to demonstrate competent electrical knowledge and skills including use of hand held voltage meters and testers, checking voltages from 12VDC to 480VAC, wire and unwire motors up to 480VAC and other assorted electrical components, reverse rotation on motors, check breakers, check and replace fuses.
  • Ability to identify appropriate maintenance tools for various mechanical equipment and systems.
  • Ability to read, follow and comprehend equipment manuals, SOPs, SMPs, MSDSS, expanded blueprints, P&IDs, and basic mathematical instructions; and to learn and recognize the applications of new materials.
  • Ability to influence and lead others in daily work.
  • Possesses effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to write in a clear, legible and accurate manner.
  • Possesses knowledge and ability to select and work with general, construction and metric tools.
  • Possesses an understanding of math in order to mix and apply liquids to equipment.
  • Possesses basic keyboarding skills and be able to comfortably work with technology and computers (such as Microsoft Office Suite, LIMS and other software systems required).
  • Possesses and maintains current driver's license consistent with Service Authority policy.
  • Ability to work on-call as needed.
  • Possesses at least six years experience working in the mechanical repair trade.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Or a combination of education and experience as described above.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Previous experience leading, developing and supervising others.
  • Virginia Wastewater Operator's License.
Special Requirements:
  • Must meet training and developmental requirements as specified on the Senior Mechanic Checklist; this checklist is maintained by the employee's supervisor and the Department of Organizational Development.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license consistent with Service Authority policy requirements.

O&M ONLY:

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker endorsement, or acquired 120 days after employment. Must also pass an air brakes knowledge test.
  • Valid Medical Examiner's Card (DOT Physical) or obtain within 120 days of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license consistent with Service Authority policy requirements.
