Job Summary:
 

The Safety Specialist is the primary site-specific safety training resource for their regional facilities, and works closely with the regional SHE team on larger region and company-wide initiatives. Responsibilities within their area includes:

Requirements:
 

  • Promote SHE awareness by building on existing culture and program strengths, contributing communication with all level employees, and promoting positive reinforcement of safety and health rules and regulations.
  • The Safety Specialist must maintain a strong focus in multiple industrial settings ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA as well as state and local standards.
  • Assist Facility Managers and site personnel with implementation and execution of site, corporate, and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge on site, corporate, and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct formal and informal site audits, job audits, and routine facility audits as needed or as directed.
  • Assist SHE/Operations teams in the execution of SHE procedures documenting findings, corrective actions, and tracking of closure items identified.
  • Support facility Site Safety Team.
  • Provide site specific safety orientation, personnel training, and manage database to track current training within designated terminals.
  • Manage storm water discharge permit applications and storm water pollution prevention plans.
  • Implement and maintain SPCC and Federal, State, and Local Response Plans.
  • Support third party contractors to ensure compliance with the federal and state requirements.
  • Maintain environmental programs, procedures and policies.
  • Effectively communicate changes to environmental procedures and policies to affected parties.
  • Track environmental compliance measures and trends.
  • Train terminal employees on environmental program requirements.
  • Audit environmental programs, identify gaps, and work with environmental team to implement corrective actions.
  • Assist with environmental agency inspections and investigations.
  • Complete regulatory tasks on time with appropriate closure status.
  • Work with facility personnel to identify solutions to arising SHE issues and audit findings.
  • Perform other duties as required and requested.

 


Experience / Specific Knowledge:

  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • 3+ years of Safety experiences in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of regulations and standards and hazard recognition injury management skills and written and verbal communication skills as they pertain to OSHA, NFPA, NEC, ANSI, state and local standards.
  • Basic knowledge of environmental regulations, permitting, tracking and reporting.
  • Position may require up to 50% local travel.


Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Professional safety and/or IH certifications highly desired but not required.


Competencies, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to deal effectively with people and resolve conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to identify possible root causes of problems and develop and implement corrective actions for resolution of problems
  • Ability to make decisions and/or take action based on logical assumptions derived from factual information gathered.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Successful completion of background check and post-offer and random drug screens.
  • Ability to speak and understand English

  • Capable of performing SHE on-call duties.

  • Demonstrate ability to communicate permitting requirements to EMR personnel.
  • MS Office Skills – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to network within the EMR organization to support SHE effort.
  • Maintain valid driver license.


Education/Experience/Knowledge:

  • A BS degree in a technical discipline, such as environmental science or engineering, or equivalent job experience is required.
  • Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local/City occupational safety, health, waste, storm water, air, and wastewater regulations.
  • Technical experience in evaluating multi-media environmental regulations and developing company specific procedures and guidelines that meet the intent of those regulations.
