BASIC PURPOSE

Reporting to the Recreation Coordinator, Aquatic Staff I/II/II are responsible for teaching swim lessons in accordance with the Parks and Recreation Department's Learn to Swim Program. Lifeguards are expected to follow the policies and procedures to maintain patron safety in the facilities.

Lacey Parks, Culture and Recreation manages three local high school swimming pools: North Thurston, Timberline and River Ridge. During the non-school hours, Lacey Parks and Recreation offers community programming such as swim lessons, aquatic fitness classes, open swim, and facilitates rentals for private groups.

These positions are part-time positions working approximately 5-10 hours per week during the school year and 25-30 hours per week during the summer.

Applicants will be considered by level of experience.

Aquatic Staff I $16.80 - $17.92 Hourly

Aquatic Staff II $17.16 - $18.38 Hourly

Aquatic Staff III $18.32 - $19.63 Hourly

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Aquatic Staff I dutiesinclude, but are not limited to:

Lifeguard In-Training

* Provides and maintains high standards of professionalism and excellent customer service to all program participants and program visitors.

* Complies with the City of Lacey's work safety standards and procedures.

* Administers first-aid and follow standard procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne pathogens.

* Responds quickly to rescue and emergency situations.

* Prepares and sets up equipment prior to the start of each shift.

* Wears a uniform (lifeguard shirt, swimsuit, emergency fanny pack, and whistle.

* Maintains a constant scan of the water when on duty.

* Maintains guarding area until relieved or in response to an emergency.

* Attends all mandatory trainings.

* Completes accurate reports of rescues, accidents, disciplines, and first-aid treatments.

Swim Instructor In-Training

* Provides and maintains high standards of professionalism and excellent customer service to all program participants and program visitors.

* Complies with the City of Lacey's work safety standards and procedures.

* Works with a lead instructor in learning the learn-to-swim progression for teaching.

* Teaches swim lessons on a regular basis.

* Prepares daily lesson plans.

* Prepares and set-up equipment prior to the start of each class.

* Provides appropriate discipline to class participants.

Aquatic Staff II dutiesinclude, but are not limited to:

* Provides and maintains high standards of professionalism and excellent customer service to all program participants and program visitors.

* Complies with the City of Lacey's work safety standards and procedures.

* Administers first aid and follow standard procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne pathogens.

* Recognizes and responds quickly to rescues and emergencies.

* Prepares and sets-up equipment prior to the start of each shift.

* Wears a uniform (lifeguard shirt, swimsuit, emergency fanny pack, and whistle.

* Maintains a constant scan of the water when on duty.

* Maintains guarding area until relieved or in response to an emergency.

* Attends all mandatory trainings.

* Completes accurate reports of rescues, accidents, disciplines, and first-aid treatments.

* Teaches swim lessons on a regular basis.

* Prepares daily lesson plans.

* Provides appropriate discipline to class participants.

* Communicates effectively with peers, trainers, and supervisors.

* Maintain a positive attitude when given feedback.

Aquatic Staff III dutiesinclude, but are not limited to:

* Trains new and existing staff, when assigned, in swim instructing and lifeguarding practices.

* Ensures staff use preventative lifeguarding techniques, enforce rules correctly, and knows the areas of pool coverage.

* Evaluates and if needed change pool areas of coverage/positions to ensure the best visibility of patrons.

* Sets an example and holds other staff to high standards of professionalism and excellent customer service to all program participants and program visitors.

* Leads staff in rescue/incident operations.

* Observes instructors and provides guidance/suggestions on how to improve teaching.

* Ensures instructors are maintaining high standards of student safety and valuable swimming instruction.

* Maintains safety/rescue equipment and replenishes as needed.

* Ensures reports are accurately completed and turned in for rescues, accidents, discipline, and first-aid treatments.

* Lifeguards in a proactive and preventative manner.

* Enforces rules correctly and knows the areas of pool coverage.

* Maintains safety/rescue equipment and replenishes as needed.

* Teaches swim lessons on a regular basis.

* Communicates effectively with peers, trainers, and supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Aquatics Staff I, II, and III all require the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

* General water safety practices.

* Swim lesson instruction.

* Knowledge of basic swimming strokes (Front Crawl and Breaststroke).

Skill in:

* Using verbal and non-verbal behavior to show an open, accepting attitude.

* Greeting the public and explaining all program information readily and thoroughly.

* Taking the time to ensure that messages are easily understood.

* Portraying an image of knowledge, confidence, professionalism, fairness, and caring.

* Dressing appropriately and clean, as a result the City and Parks, Culture and Recreation profession are portrayed in a positive, "service" related manner.

Ability to:

* Respond appropriately to an emergency.

* Follow oral and written instructions.

* Work in a team setting.

* Swim efficiently.

In addition to the above, Aquatics Staff II and III require the ability to teach the basic learn to swim progression. Aquatics III staff are also required to have knowledge of training procedures and leadership skills.
