Truck Driver
Full-Time
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of skilled tasks in the operation and service of trucks, transports, and specialized wheeled equipment needed to construct, maintain or repair county roads and service systems.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Road Department Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Operates snow removal and sanding equipment to remove snow, ice, etc. from roadways to maintain safe travel conditions within an assigned area; applies ice control materials and chemicals on intersections, curves, hills, and railroad crossings.
Responds to call-outs for sporadic and urgent seasonal work such as plowing snow and repairing road damage or removing materials from roadways.
Operates trucks, pup trailers, water trucks, bobtail dump trucks, flatbeds, and related transport equipment; transports gravel, asphalt, debris, equipment, and related materials.
Performs daily preventive maintenance and routine repair procedures; assures proper fluid levels; performs various lubricating tasks as needed to assure proper operation; performs routine vehicle safety inspections.
Assists in seasonal operations such as patching, crack sealing, seal coating, tree trimming, etc.
May operate heavy equipment in a learning or training capacity or on a temporary basis as assigned.
Performs other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education and Experience:
a. Graduation from high school; must possess and maintain a CDL with a clean MVR. AND
b. Two (2) years of experience performing the above or related duties. OR
c. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Some knowledge of the principles and techniques of heavy mechanized equipment operations; hazards and safety standards common in medium and heavy equipment operation and maintenance and repair.
Skill in operation of light to medium duty equipment.
Ability to operate various kinds of light to medium duty equipment; perform strenuous labor for extended periods of time under varying conditions; follow instructions; establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the general public.
3. Special Qualifications:
- Must be flagger certified or be able to attain certification when required.
- May be required to obtain a “Tanker” endorsement.
- Work Environment:
Work is typically performed outside with frequent exposure to temperature changes, dust, fumes, moving parts, and weather conditions. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, involving muscular strain, such as walking, climbing standing, stooping, sitting, heavy lifting, and reaching. Communicating, hearing, and seeing are required for the completion of essential functions. Common eye, hand, finger, leg, and foot dexterity required. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, and discriminating thinking. Constant travel in equipment required in job performance. Some daily aspects of the job pose threats or hazards capable of producing severe physical injury.
