The position is located in Sells, AZ.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, ensures the safety and operation of heavy construction equipment and support vehicles by providing maintenance and repair services according to program policies, codes and regulations.

The work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness and conformance to established standards; major work tasks are covered by instructions or procedures and unusual situations are referred to a supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains and repairs hydraulic components and circuitry utilized in power systems for diesel and gasoline powered heavy construction equipment.
  • Develops and implements a preventative maintenance schedule for heavy construction equipment and support vehicles.
  • Assesses and diagnoses repairs required and makes determination as to what can be repaired in-house and which repairs will require outside services.
  • Performs routine mechanical and electrical repairs to heavy equipment.
  • Maintains documentation of work performed, estimated time required, parts, and supplies needed to complete all repairs.
  • Provides on-site repairs to heavy equipment and vehicles as required.
  • Assists in review of vendor billings for payment.
  • Performs safety inspections on heavy equipment and support vehicles to ensure safe and proper working condition.
  • Prepares recommendations for annual budget for personnel, equipment, supplies, and subcontractors.
  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending vehicle maintenance and safety training workshops.
  • Completes and compiles all vehicle and equipment maintenance reports.
  • Observes all OSHA and Tribal codes, regulations, policies and procedures related to safety.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of operation of a variety of heavy and light equipment and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of emergency equipment, such as fire pumps, emergency warning systems.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, diesel powered apparatus, hydraulic, compression and maintenance of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment.
  • Skill in safely using, maintaining and repairing specialize equipment.
  • Skill in operating heavy equipment.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Ability to operate required tools and equipment.
  • Ability to use various hand tools and pneumatic hand tools and measuring instruments and gauges
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical repair manuals.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's Degree in Heavy Equipment Operations or related field and two years' work experience in maintenance and repair of heavy equipment, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:

  • Must have journey level certification.
  • Must obtain certifications in Diesel Technician, Automotive Technician, and Emergency Vehicle Technician certification within one year of hire.
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background check is required to determine suitability for hire, including a 39-month Motor Vehicle Record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license, (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham Language and English as a condition of employment.
