Program Summary

The program will put participants right at the heart of Houston’s vibrant hospitality, convention and tourism industries.  You will not only be part of the successful Houston First team but will have the opportunity to network with a wide range of industry professionals, dive into personal and career development classes, and work with people from all over the city.

The program is also designed to help you build skills like problem-solving techniques, working in a team, guest service savvy and effective communication that will help you throughout your career.

  • Program dates: June 3 - July 26
  • Pay rate:  $15 per hour
  • Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week with an occasional weekend.
 

Physical conditions:
Normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions.  Infrequent exposure to outside elements including heat and/or humidity, wet conditions, and prolonged standing/walking. 
 

What to expect:

During this exciting program, you must work quickly and efficiently while exhibiting exceptional service standards resulting in meaningful interactions with other team members.  Your ability to be flexible will be critical to navigating the variety of projects.  The Internship program is designed to provide practical work experience and growth and networking opportunities for college students wanting exposure to the Hospitality Industry. Interns are exposed to the operations of the hospitality, will assist with special projects, and will participate in a variety of assignments and tasks aimed at fulfilling the internship program objectives. The program focuses on three areas: experience, education and engagement.

Successful applicants must:

  • Pass a background check and drug screening before starting to work.  Criminal record, educational status and employment history will be verified
  • Be at least 18 years of age at time of application
  • Accept Houston First appearance guidelines
  • Possess unrestricted US work authorization for the duration of the program - HFC does not sponsor visas 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Participate in meetings with Leaders and Team Members in the industry to collaborate on special projects and initiatives.
  • Shadow multiple department positions and train in a variety of tasks.
  • Participate in events and projects as assigned in one or two hospitality departments to include: hotel management, special events and membership, facility operations, restaurant operations, marketing, convention sales, film and tourism.
  • Assist in planning events, working with clients, event coordination, and event set up.
  • Attend Company functions and networking events
  • Take notes and memos during meetings
  • Provide suggestions to management for improving customer service and internal processes
  • Other duties and special projects as required


 

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities


 

Education and/or Experience: 

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university. Recent college graduates who received an undergraduate degree within the last 12 months
  • Be currently enrolled and taking classes at an accredited college, university, or higher education program OR have graduated from an accredited college, university, or higher education program within 24 months of the application posting date
  • Have completed at least one semester at an accredited college, university, or higher education program by time of program start date 


 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Operate standard office equipment and personal computer(s) using Microsoft Office.
  • Professional communication both verbal and written
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate ability to thrive in a challenging and fun environment with many unknowns and changing objectives.
  • Demonstrate project management skills to develop and execute multiple projects simultaneously to meet overlapping deadlines.
  • Demonstrate above average organizational, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
