Maintenance Production

Primary Purpose of Position:

• Safely and efficiently ensure proper operation of high-speed, automated production machinery and equipment used at the company, including computerized and robotic equipment and machinery. Troubleshoot, build, dismantle, rebuild, repair, replace, and install machinery and component parts in compliance with all company rules and general industry standards and practices of human safety, quality, food safety, and hygiene. [PLC programming not included].
• Identify proper operational condition and performance of all company machinery/equipment and deviations from these conditions, including those due to machinery malfunctions, wear of parts, operational adjustments, or raw material issues. Use appropriate tools and materials and industry repair standards to affect the proper operation of company machinery/equipment.
• Have an all-inclusive knowledge of machinery/equipment functions. Identify any and all power sources affecting machinery/equipment (including, but not limited to electrical, hydraulic, rotational, stored energy, pneumatic, heat energy, compressed gases, physical and radiological), and thorough knowledge of how to disable all power sources for any machine or energized/mechanized system.
• Act as an authorized employee, follow company procedures and industry standards for the complete Lock Out Tag Out (“LOTO”) of energized machinery/equipment.
• If assigned, complete company forklift training and obtain company forklift certification and if assigned, complete company training on aerial lifts (including scissor lifts and boom lifts). Complete company training on LOTO, personal fall protection, and machine guarding in addition to all company safety training. Work at height on roofs, industrial platforms, conveyors, wire runs and races.
• Understand operation of all machinery and parts in the facility, including but not limited to engines, motors, powered industrial conveyors, rollers, belts and chains, energized hoists, rotating machinery and machinery moving robotically in 3-D space, and ozone generators.
• Assure safety interlocks are functioning properly at all times. Do not bypass any interlock in the facility. Stop any equipment and repair immediately if an interlock is not functional.
• Identify hazards in the workplace, including mechanical and those related to work practices that could affect the safety of others: report immediately to management.
• Respond appropriately to alarms (both sound and visual) and warning lights on all machinery. Keep hands out of moving machinery. Unjam/clear stopped machines using hands and tools.
• Use computerized screens and manual switches, safety interlocks, manual jog button, and all controls to ensure smooth operation of machinery.
• In safe and appropriate manner, use hand tools and powered hand tools as well as machine tools including a variety of saws, lathes, milling machines, drill presses, grinders, jacks, and hoists.
• Perform Arc, TIG, and Acetylene welding, cutting and grinding in compliance with company procedures.
• Work with employees and managers in production, quality, and with other maintenance personnel to ensure machine set up is correct for the product, or to resolve problems. Maintain the safe operation of machinery [be responsible for the safety of others in proximity when using manual jog buttons, or setting-up or troubleshooting equipment.] Do not operate controls when operator or technician is cleaning machinery]. Train and advise management, operators and fellow employees as to the proper operation and hazards involved in machinery/equipment set ups, operations and repairs.
• Able to identify circuits that are electrically energized and /or exposed, including components, capacitors and conductors. Understand and identify the nominal voltage using the proper voltage and amperage test equipment and procedures. Do not work on energized circuits unless compliant with company policy and procedures.
• Understand different voltages in the same cabinet or panel. Work on energized equipment only when necessary for troubleshooting. All electrical power is to be Locked Out/Tagged Out if it is not necessary to run the equipment to identify repairs. [Example: if a repair is due to a mechanical issue, or if an electrical issue has already been identified, all power should be disabled and machine should be Locked Out/Tagged Out.]
• Recognize, avoid, immediately report, and mitigate electrical hazards in the facility.
• Maintain a Functional Relationship with Production and Quality Control management.
• Cleaning – Keep equipment, tools, shop clean at all times. Use only approved cleaners, lubricants and chemicals in the facility. Keep floors clean, dry and free of debris. Use appropriate bins for used supplies, used rags, and trash. Dispose of oil, grease, cleaners, solvents, and all chemicals in accordance with company policy Do not use any chemicals in unlabeled containers.
• Use PPE including in accordance with company policies.
• Work safely and efficiently, using planning skills to minimize downtime and repair machinery/equipment safely.
• Complete all assigned paperwork including shift reports.
• Identify confined space work areas and do not perform any confined space entry, unless in accordance with company training and policies. Follow company policy for respirator use.

General Qualification Standards:

Able to read and neatly print, high school diploma or equivalent, strong ability to communicate with co-workers and supervisors. Understand diagrams, drawings, schematics, and manufacturer’s publications including specifications, operation and technical manuals, and company and consultant training presentations. Treat others with tact and respect, regardless of their status or position. Act as a team member, maintain a harassment-free and bullying-free workplace, demonstrate honesty and integrity in workplace interactions with others. Calm, professional demeanor.

KEY COMPETENCIES:

Mechanical skills: able to understand, use and explain the operation of any and all machinery/equipment in the facility. Understand, use, repair machinery/equipment, component parts, and machine controls on machinery/equipment, including sensors, safety interlocks and emergency stops, computer screens. Maintain awareness of surroundings, body position, location of other personnel and forklifts and act accordingly. Use precision measuring equipment as necessary including calipers, gauges, micrometers, metric and American tool and material measurements.

Mathematical Skills: add, subtract, multiply and divide. Understanding of decimals and fractions. Understanding quantities in terms of “less than” 0. Recognition and use of numbers up to and beyond hundreds of thousands. Accurately record numbers on checklists and forms.

Physical Abilities: This position routinely involves moderate to extreme physical exertion, occasionally for extended time periods. Able to stand and walk on a concrete floor for on a continuous basis for the duration of the shift; climb industrial stairs and ladders and work at elevations. Able to work in awkward positions and tight spaces. Plan all work to avoid strains and other injuries. Use all ladders, including extension ladders safely. Physically able to bend/stoop/squat/crouch/kneel/twist/climb/crawl/ and balance as necessary. Able to frequently lift, carry, push and pull objects of various sizes and up to 50 pounds from one level to another at varying heights. Plan how to lift, and ask for assistance in lifting heavy and/or awkward loads. Perform repetitive finger, arm and upper body movements to reach or move objects or equipment controls, able to turn head and neck to look over shoulder. Vision requirements include focus at different distances, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision. Environmental Demands of the Position Work indoors and outdoors as assigned. Work areas include different levels of noise, working in areas close to moving powered industrial lift trucks (forklifts), and close proximity to moving and powered industrial machinery which the company takes steps to guard adequately. Heat and cold in the workplace, and water on floors and dripping water may occur. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including but not limited to, coveralls or company issued pants and shirts, welding face shields, gloves, hearing and eye protection, are required in some parts of the workplace and when performing certain tasks.
