Position Summary:

This position plays a key role in the manufacture of structural cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. Working closely with teammates and management to master machining methods and techniques to achieve quality standards in the machining phase of the panel manufacturing process. This position may help with other functions normally completed by teammates supporting the manufacturing, production, and quality processes.

Essential Functions:

  • Consistently show commitment and support for the Sterling vision, mission, policies and procedures.
  • Performs work in a safe manner in compliance with the job safety analysis (JSA), and other work instructions and policies as outlined by management for the use of hand and power tools, and saws.
  • Following policies and procedures, wear the designated personal protective equipment (PPE) required.
  • Maintain a clean workspace that is clear of debris and clutter following the guidelines outlined in the 5S visual factory standard, end of shift cleaning protocols, and tool placement(s).Follow all operating, cleaning, and safety procedures in the operation of company equipment and machines including fork-lifts, overhead cranes, saws, and other tools that may be used.
  • Immediately report any safety related injury or illness and/or any machinery failure to management, and safety. Follow protocols as outlined for lockout, tagout and as outlined in the company policies and procedures.
  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions for the position and the production line.
  • Basic understanding of lumber grade and species.
  • Interpret and understand blueprints, shop drawings and other written instructions for the production line and department.
  • Layout and prepare CLT panels as part of the pre-machining setup to meet drawing dimensions, specifications, and quality standards for machining tolerances.
  • Learn and master use of hand power tools including circular saw, beam chain saw, and notch cutters.
  • Perform pre-cut quality check to confirm setup, layout, dimensions and verify other items that may apply.
  • Safely operate machines, chain beam saws, circular saws (18” blade), notch and groove cutters during production.
  • Perform quality control inspections with teammates including dimensional and cut quality, and appearance checks.
  • Follow all reporting and record keeping procedures, and immediately report any quality discrepancies, concerns to management.
  • Perform forklift and material handling operations as requested or needed.
  • Communicate with team members and support teams to ensure production deadlines are achieved at high quality levels with minimal wasted time and materials.
  • Assist other teammates including rotation to other machining and finishing stations as needed, and when requested.
  • Cross train within the team, and across other departments, as needed and needed.
  • All other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Highschool graduate, or GED is required. Journeyman Carpenter, or comparable trade school certification preferred.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in similar work environment and woodworking position with machinery, power tools, and saws.
  • Must be able to interpret blueprints, tape measurements, and digital calipers.
  • Strong math skills with ability to convert decimals to fractions and understand dimensional tolerances.
  • Previous production experience and fork-lift and/or overhead crane operations preferred.

 

Work Environment:

  • Regularly exposed to hand tools with risk of electrical shock and/ or sparks that may cause burns, cuts, abrasions or other injury that may occur resulting from processes involving torching, cutting, and/or grinding.
  • Regularly exposed to fumes, dust, high noise levels, and vibrations.
  • Occasional exposure heights and to changing weather and ground and/or floor conditions.
