SJS Executives, LLC (SJS), also doing business as SJS Industrial, is seeking a part-time Respirator Fit Tester to help a Veterans Administration (VA) facility in Washington, DC, with regular long term fit testing for its civilian employees.

SJS is a Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) with 150 employees coast to coast and a headquarters in Virginia Beach, Virginia; it specializes in professional services to support federal and military organizations like the VA.

The ideal candidate for this position may be:

  • An Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), Industrial Hygiene (IH), Occupational Safety, or Public Health college student or recent graduate.
  • A recently retired EHS or IH technician who is seeking a long term part time job with minimal but reliable hours for up to 5 years.
  • A part time EHS or IH technician who is seeking a secondary part time position for additional benefits and income.

All qualified candidates will be considered.

The pay for this position will be $19/hr. SJS also offers the following benefits to part-time employees: Paid sick time (rate of 1 hour gained for every 30 hours worked up to 56 hours per year), paid federal Holidays during weeks scheduled to work, and a medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, and 401K benefits bundle. If there is interest on both sides (the Respirator Fit Tester and SJS), the position has the potential to evolve into a full-time role.

Respirator fit testing days are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm with a half hour unpaid lunch. If the VA needs to change the schedule, the Respirator Fit Tester will receive at least one week of prior notice.

Responsibilities will include:

  • The tester will perform respirator fit tests, assuring proper fit and mask size for clinical employees or staff members.
  • The tester will efficiently organize and manage the fit-testing process, including appropriate documentation and cleaning/proper storage of equipment, and proactively maintain inventory of testing supplies.
  • The tester will also maintain constant or intermittent communication with their SJS supervisor during all shifts.
  • The tester shall use an OSHA-Accepted Fit Test Protocol (i.e., QLFT or QNFT), per OSHA 1910.134, for each test subject fitted, tested, and will be issued a NIOSH approved respiratory device.
  • The tester shall keep the VA’s Safety Team informed of the level of supplies needed for the current and following week.
  • The tester shall be required to periodically clean the fit testing equipment to ensure that saccharin is flowing through the nebulizer properly.
  • The tester shall insure each VA employee has been medically cleared to wear a respirator within the past 6 months.
  • This is a technical role where you will repeat prescribed processes, identify problems, and apply basic logical solutions.
  • The Approved Respirators List is representative of typical respiratory devices used by wearers of a respiratory device in this facility are 3M 1860, 3M 1870.
  • Shall abide by applicable SJS and VA facility rules and requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Must have customer service experience, and the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Previous experience in safety, Industrial Hygiene, and conducting respirator fit testing.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Health or related preferred but not required.
  • Must have knowledge and experience with the following: OSHA respirator standard 29 CFR 1910.134 and ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170-2021, Ventilation of Health Care Facilities.
  • Possess the skills and abilities to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing and experience in preparing correspondence, written reports, and in briefing safety personnel. Due to safety concerns, this language capability is important.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a drug test and a thorough background check for access onto a military installation; please note the background check for this position extends past 7 years, in conformance with federal law and US Department of Justice guidelines for work on a military installation.
