Position: Educational Counselor Classification: Professional Support B Department: Student Services Report to: Executive Dean of Students General Job Summary: This is a part-time position (up to 25 hrs./week) located on the Emmetsburg Campus from August 13th – May 15th. Primary responsibility is to provide personal, academic, career, and transfer counseling services to students at the College. The successful candidate may start immediately upon hire or in the fall depending on the candidate’s schedule. % of TIME Essential Duties/Responsibilities Constant (67-100%) Meet with students on an appointment schedule or on a walk-in basis as needed to effectively meet staff and student needs. Counsel students on academic and career goals, choices and programs and assist them in making appropriate decisions. Counsel students on personal matters and assist as appropriate to resolve problems or refer the student for professional support, e.g., alcoholism counseling, mental health, eating disorders, food insecurity, etc. Provide early identification of and intervention with potentially at-risk students. Follow-up with students identified of needing extra support. Provide faculty-staff training/support to increase student retention and program completion. Assist students in deciding on transfer institutions and in determining transfer requirements. Assist with Collegewide projects, such as: Laker Visit Days, Alcohol Screening, Depression Screening, Mental Health services, orientation days, etc. Frequent (34-66%) Conduct assessments that enable students to become self-aware and increase their achievement at the college level. Provide interventions for at-risk students. Establish and maintain confidential records of students. Continually market services to students and staff to enhance awareness of services available. Establish and maintain contact with appropriate agency personnel and Iowa Lakes Community College faculty and staff. Follow up on extensively absent students. Occasional (10-33%) Complete annual reports, as required, by the College to comply with state and federal regulations. Participate in statewide counseling organizations. Serve on selected and volunteer committees. Participate in new student orientation, student housing education program, and activities related to substance abuse prevention, mental health concerns, eating disorders, etc. Attend meetings and conferences as required by supervisor. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer for word processing, data base information, and the mainframe. Represent the College and school district in a positive manner to employees, students, visitors, and the general public. Must be enthusiastic and energetic in performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Ability to express oneself clearly and effectively in oral and written documentation. Ability to read and understand written and oral instruction or communication. Ability to efficiently perform tasks in an environment of frequent interruptions. Ability to assume responsibility, deal effectively with problems and exercise good judgment when making decisions. Ability to establish rapport with students and staff and gain their confidence. Special Demands: Sedentary to light work. Position involves sitting most of the time, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally (10-33%). Stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, and repetitive motion occasionally (10-33%). Walking, lifting, and grasping frequently (34-66%). Talking, hearing, and viewing various types of close visual work constantly (67-100%). Required to travel utilizing personal vehicle. Must have valid driver’s license, good driving record and provide proof of insurance. Employment with Iowa Lakes Community College is dependent upon successful passage of a criminal background check.
