Job Summary

This position is a vital member of the HR team responsible for fostering a positive and productive work environment across the business. This position plays a key role in developing and overseeing employee relations policies, and practices to mitigate risk for the company. This role collaborates closely with various stakeholders across HR, the business, employment law, and compliance to provide guidance related to employee relations matters and conflict resolution. This position requires a strong understanding of Federal and State employment law, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build effective relationships with employees and managers to promote engagement, productivity, a safe and inclusive work environment, and a positive employee experience.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement employee relations strategy, program, policies, and procedures that promote a positive and inclusive work culture aligned with Selective's values.
  • Handle complex employee relations issues and internal workplace investigations including harassment, discrimination, retaliation, workplace violence, and other violations of policies or procedures.
  • Provide analysis, assess risk, and develop recommendations to resolve issues.
  • Ensure issues are addressed promptly and impartially in line with company values and applicable laws.
  • Partner with outside counsel on all aspects of company's immigration case management. Ensure timely and accurate filings, advise employees and management on immigration related questions, oversee recruitment process, and ensure records and public inspection files are properly maintained.
  • Partner with internal and external employment counsel to defend the organization in third-party actions. Act as a liaison with outside counsel as needed on all aspects of investigation coordination.
  • Coach and counsel leaders and employees on employee relations matters, performance management, employee conduct, conflict resolution, restructures/reorganizations, policy interpretation, and state/federal employment laws.
  • Responsible for developing, implementing, and updating HR policies and procedures ensuring compliance with Federal, State, and local employment law and alignment with company culture and values.
  • Develop processes, practices, and templates to ensure consistency in investigations, performance plans, absence management, unemployment, and employee grievances.
  • Leverage data including turnover rates, exit interview data, and other indicators to identify trends, patterns, and areas of concern. Recommend and implement proactive mitigation strategies.
  • Partner with talent development to provide training and educational programs to employees and management on HR policies, procedures, and compliance matters.
  • Stay current on Federal, State, and local laws that impact the company and/or employees.
  • Ability to understand the potential long-term implications related to Federal, State, or local policy changes and help formulate a position that protects the company and its interests.

Education & Requirements

  • College degree or equivalent experience
  • SPHR or PHR preferred
  • 7-10 years of relevant HR experience, including 3+ years of HR business partner or employee relations experience
  • Proven experience leading employee relations investigations, researching and analyzing relevant information, and documenting and delivering defensible investigation reports.
  • Courage to challenge the status quo and ability to present strong positions based on evidence and fact finding.
  • Works well with ambiguity while addressing complex issues and reaching clear solutions.
  • Ability to work autonomously while understanding the importance and need for collaboration with team members and partners.
  • Comfortable engaging with and influencing all levels of leadership.
  • Solid knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and lead multiple activities, projects, and priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and discretion.
  • Ability to travel as needed.

Salary range: $116,000.00 - $167,000.00. The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include the candidate's qualifications and experience.
