Normal Work Schedule:

Hours of Work: 0700 – 1500 Days of Work: MTWTF

Note: The hours of work are established as needed by operations and at the direction of management and are subject to change by management as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position works as both a conductor and as a track laborer for a small 10-mile short line railroad operation.

  • Move trains safely in the yards and over the road.
  • Must be able to climb ladders, board and/or ride freight cars, operate track switches, inspect cars and use radio communications to control train movement.
  • Be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions – including snow, ice, rain, cold and heat – and be expected to work various hours, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Must be able to solve problems quickly and react to changing conditions on the job.
  • Must have strong vision and hearing, including the ability to: see and read hand signals from near and far; distinguish between colors; visually judge the speed and distance of moving objects; see at night; and recognize changes in sounds.
  • Remove and replace track and track components (e.g. ties, rails, bars, etc.)
  • Replace or repair track switches with specific components.
  • Drill holes through rails for insertion of bolts and tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold ends or rails together.
  • Correct deviations in track surface, alignment and gauge.
  • Cut rails to specific lengths.
  • Sort track material for loading and unloading.
  • Install and repair street and railroad crossings.
  • Cut brush and vegetation from the right-of-way.
  • Spray switches, angle bars and joints with oil for lubrication.
  • Assist with unloading railcars into trucks.
  • Assist with mechanical repairs to equipment, railcars, and locomotives.
  • Must also be physically strong: able to push, pull, lift and carry up to 25 pounds frequently; up to 50 pounds occasionally; and up to 100 pounds infrequently.
  • Must have good balance to regularly step on and off equipment and work from ladders to perform various tasks. And you must be able to walk, sit, stand, and stoop comfortably. Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Help maintain written and computer records for maintenance and repairs as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Computer experience.
  • Mechanical experience or experience with small tools is helpful.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation of the equipment used.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Must have valid Driver’s License
  • High school education or GED

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work outside in environmental conditions which at times include extreme heat and extreme cold.
  • Be able to lift and carry up to 100 pounds.
  • Stand/walk 4-8 hours per day.
  • Climb stairs and ladders.
  • Support oneself on a ladder
