Department: Facility Services Location: Albany, NY Apply by: March 17, 2024 Position Summary The New York State Teachers’ Retirement System (NYSTRS) is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Safety Coordinator. This role will be responsible for establishing the physical security and emergency preparedness of NYSTRS. This includes the responsibility for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety and security protocols to ensure the well-being and protection of our employees, visitors, and assets. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in safety, security, and emergency management (policies, procedures, and protocols), as well as a strong knowledge of safety and security regulations, standards, and best practices. The ability to create and administer policies to minimize risks and excellent communication skills are essential. Minimum Qualifications A master’s degree in a relevant field such as safety, security, or emergency management and three (3) years of experience in a corporate or industrial setting providing oversight of physical site safety, security management and emergency operations and response practices. OR, A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as safety, security, or emergency management and five (5) years of experience in a corporate or industrial setting providing oversight of physical site safety, security management and emergency operations and response practices. OR, An associate degree in a relevant field such as safety, security, or emergency management and seven (7) years of experience in a corporate or industrial setting providing oversight of physical site safety, security management and emergency operations and response practices. OR, Graduation from a high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and ten (10) years of experience in a corporate or industrial setting providing oversight of physical site safety, security management and emergency operations and response practices. Preferred Qualifications Certification in safety and security management, such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Protection Professional (CPP). Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal safety and security regulations. Experience in conducting safety and security audits, risk assessments, and investigations. Familiarity with crisis management and business continuity planning. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism. Physical capability and ability to respond to emergency situations. Demonstrated understanding of Standard Operations Procedures and Emergency Operations Plans, and experience in writing and reviewing such documents. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, including the ability to produce meeting minutes, reports, and presentations. Demonstrated exceptional organizational skills, sound judgement, and sound decision-making skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Incident Command System (ICS) Training (ICS 100, 200, 700, 800) Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Program (HSEEP) Training. Current or previous first responder (fire, police, emergency medical services), experience. Job Duties The Safety Coordinator is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties: Responsible for the physical site security, safety, and emergency preparedness and response of the organization and will be a key member of the Emergency Management Team (EMT) Lead the coordination, in conjunction with the Emergency Management Team, and determine the emergency preparedness levels and needs for NYSTRS, which includes situations involving active shooter, fire, chemical spill, hazardous weather, and other emergency events. Act as the primary liaison and provide support for the organization’s Emergency Management Team (EMT) during planned/known weather events (i.e., snow and ice, etc.) and other unplanned incidents that require EMT response. Serve as the NYSTRS' representative on the facilities' Safety Committees and prepare reports to management as necessary. Coordinate with the NYSTRS EMT to address major safety issues for the organization and facilities. Review, update and maintain NYSTRS' Emergency & Safety Preparedness policies and documents (i.e., Standard Operating Procedures, Emergency Operations Plans, and safety meeting minutes) and matrices with NYSTRS facilities. Participate and lead special projects for organization-wide emergency operations initiatives. Develop and implement safety and security policies and procedures to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Oversee contract security services. Administer the “Rave” mass communication system and communications during emergencies and weather-related events. Other Duties and Responsibilities: Conduct regular safety and security audits to identify potential hazards, threats or vulnerabilities and create action plans to mitigate risk. Collaborate with NYSTRS Emergency Management Team to develop and deliver safety and security training programs for employees, including emergency response procedures. Schedule periodic safety drills to maintain response preparedness. Maintain and update safety and security manuals, documents, and records to ensure accuracy and accessibility. Coordinate with external agencies, such as law enforcement and fire departments, to ensure effective emergency response and incident management. Monitor security systems, including access control, surveillance cameras, and alarms for operational readiness, and promptly respond to any identified issues or alarms. Report deficiencies to facilities managers. Investigate and report on safety and security incidents, including accidents, theft, vandalism, or unauthorized access, and recommend corrective actions. Support sensitive administrative personnel actions (such as terminations, disciplinary leave, etc.) which require employee access changes and increased security protocols. Stay updated on industry best practices, emerging trends, and technological advancements in safety and security to continuously improve protocols and procedures. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement crisis management plans and business continuity strategies. Attend safety related meetings such as Emergency Management Team and quarterly Health and Wellness meetings. Salary Grade This position is a Grade 27. Salary Range If hired prior to April 1, 2015: $109,302 to $142,614 If hired after April 1, 2015: $109,302 to $136,502 Please note: 2024-2025 Salary schedules will be shared as soon as they are available.
