Job Description
Position Summary
Immediate opening for a private estate on Mount Desert Island for a full-time, seasonal Boat Captain during the mid-April through October months. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is service-oriented, has a love of the outdoors and is an exceptional team player.
Boat Captain Duties (Typically April through October)
- Expertise in all aspects of maintenance and operation for two Hinckley yachts (sail and jet) ranging in size from 36’-42’
- All boats should be on a weekly wash/cleaning schedule with boats of higher use being cleaned more frequently
- Daily running checks should include battery condition, engine checks, electrical checks and bilge inspection
- Maintenance of several other smaller boats, kayaks, and dinghies ranging in size from 10’-24’
- Seasonal maintenance for several floats/moorings/piers at various client properties in the area
- Daily tasks include pier/float checks, visual mooring checks, up-close mooring checks, cleaning as needed
- Hospitality services for guests may be more formal in nature
- Provide transportation for support work on island property
- Monitor and report any problems with the grounds along the waterfront
Additional dock responsibilities include:
- Perform spot checks of equipment on board (life vests, anchor, dock lines, etc.) and prepare equipment for outings on the water.
- Regularly clean and wash boats, kayaks, docks, equipment, etc. Deep clean as needed. Ensure assigned work area is clean and safe at all times for guests.
- Drive/operate boats between docks, storage slips, etc.
- Assist guests in boarding / un boarding boats with emphasis on safety.
- Greet guests in a friendly, upbeat, courteous, and professional manner.
- Other tasks as requested by management.
- Adhere to all safety policies and protocol.
Qualifications and Skills Needed
Applicants must have several years’ experience and/or boating licensing, in yacht care/maintenance/boat handling. Experience navigating Maine waters preferred. The successful candidate will demonstrate the highest levels of customer service and professionalism in all aspects of the role. Flexibility and a willingness to perform various tasks throughout the property, as needed.
Scheduling flexibility is also a requirement for Summer/Fall seasons and the availability to work on evenings/weekends/holidays is required.
The physical demands of this job include working outside in variable weather conditions. Frequent kneeling, climbing, bending, lifting, pulling, and standing are required, sometimes for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift / carry heavy objects.
Compensation
Pay will be structured according to candidate’s level of skills and experience. Pay will be based on per diem or according to number of hours worked per week. Housing is offered.
