Position Summary/Objective

The Dock Attendant promotes a culture of safety, hospitality, service, honor, and respect among our homeless guests, our staff, and volunteers, for the purpose of furthering the vision and mission of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The Dock Attendant provides general services in all auxiliary areas of shelter service – shelter deliveries, donations, clothing, and storage, and works in cooperation and collaboration with the Hospitality Manager, Development staff, CityThrift and Shelter personnel.

The Dock Attendant assists community members who bring donated items to St. Vincent de Paul Gateway Shelter for Women & Families. In addition, the Dock Attendant is responsible for determining items to be transported to the CityThrift, assisting with inventory and maintenance of shelter Central Supply, maintaining the shelter clothing rooms, receiving deliveries from vendors, and directing and assisting shelter volunteers. The Dock Attendant promotes a culture of safety, hospitality, service, honor, and respect among our homeless guests, emergency shelter staff, and volunteers, for the purpose of furthering the vision and mission of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Dayton.

Essential functions

  • Receive donations from community members in a positive manner and thank them for their donation. Offer receipts and maintain completed forms. Request assistance from custodial staff when necessary.
  • Receive, sort, and appropriately distribute all donations. This includes the collecting and storage of items needed by the shelters and the timely packing and transportation of donations to the CityThrift for retail.
  • Receive and distribute shelter deliveries to the appropriate recipients in a secure and timely manner. Request assistance from custodial and kitchen staff when required and necessary.
  • Maintain safety and security standards for shelter employees, volunteers, donors and community service volunteers in dock area and the clothing room. Immediately report injuries or safety infractions that occur in the dock area or clothing room to the Hospitality Coordinator or the Shelter Manager if the Hospitality Coordinator is not available. Report in a timely manner to shelter maintenance staff any broken or disabled dock equipment (ex. Cushman, garage door, garage heater).
  • Responsible for the security of donations and shelter deliveries received on the dock. Will report any suspected theft or misuse of donations or delivered items immediately to the Hospitality Coordinator. Ensure that the shelter garage door and outside dock door remain closed and locked when not in use by employees, donors, or shelter deliveries.
  • Maintain neatness and order of dock area and immediate outside surrounding area of the dock, the clothing room, Central Supply storage locations.
  • Train, direct and supervise volunteers assigned to dock area and clothing room, as needed.
  • Record collection drive donations for the Hospitality Coordinator as required.
  • Responsible for the safe operation and security of all areas related to dock and clothing room.
  • Responsible for maintaining positive communication with donors, staff, and guests.
  • All other duties and tasks as required.

Physical demands

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds for short distances.
  • Must be able to work with long periods of standing and/or walking.

Required education and experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain professional boundaries when working with guest
  • Customer service experience
  • Microsoft Office and email software

Work consists of sorting donations, greeting and assisting donors, making sure various areas in the shelter are stocked at all times.

making sure dock- inside and out are clean at all times as well as clothing room and shipping containers. Good communication with shelter a must.

As well as a friendly and helpful attitude when helping donors. Objectives change on a daily basis, will also be guiding volunteers in their tasks when they are here.

Position also entails helping organize and retrieve items from our Central Supply. As well as dropping items off to our Men's shelter and Central Supply.
