About the Opportunity

As a peer recovery support specialist, you will help drive progress with the multidisciplinary WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience lnstitute's Innovation Center team. You will be part of an exciting collaborative effort at an Rl institution working towards innovative solutions to advance the science around optimizing brain health. In this role, your efforts will provide management to advance rapidly evolving work of a five year-old Institute that has already performed several first in human clinical trials, and seen exponential growth in publications, grants, and IP for work that provides a foundation to improve lives of people in West Virginia and around the globe.

This position will advance the research and development missions of West Virginia University by providing the necessary skills for the coordination and implementation of operational tasks related to several research projects that are essential to the research activities of the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute.

What you'll do:

  • Work actively with patients with Substance Use Disorders who are enrolled in RNl's research studies by helping link participants to outpatient treatment.
  • Provide mentoring through life-experience to individuals experiencing substance use problems.
  • Meet face to face with individuals and identified support persons in person and/or by phone, at a frequency and format requested and agreed upon by the individual. Ideally, at least once a week.
  • Assist research team in recruitment, monitoring, and follow up of research participants.
  • Develop individualized plans with patients and monitor those wellness plans during meetings as identified above.
  • Provide information to research and treatment team to inform treatment decision making
  • Link patients to available resources, including, but not limited to: continuing education/professional development, safe housing, recovery supports, self- help groups, substance abuse and mental health services, sobriety meetings, and medical/health
    facilities.
  • Serve as a liaison to the patient's formal and informal supports, including but not limited to: their referral source, family members, client sponsors, treatment providers, and other supporters.
  • Maintain working relationships with chestnut ridge, ED and CHH staff and other agencies or institutions in order provide awareness of recovery as a reality and the availability of recovery coaching.
  • Receive on-going supervision and training in order to provide recovery coaching services to the highest degree and the benefit of the community and individuals served.
  • Assist patients in crisis situations involving social, emotional, health, and other problems.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of related experience.
  • Completion of state or nationally recognized Peer Recovery Support Specialist Certification training with a minimum of 40 hours total in the following domains: Ethics, Advocacy, Mentoring/Education, and Recovery/Wellness Planning.
    If the certification obtained required fewer than 40 hours, documentation of additional Continuing Education Units (CEUs) earned can be provided to meet the training hour requirement prior to onboarding.
  • West Virginia state and Federal criminal background check required for DHHR WV CARES regulated area
  • Bureau of Medical Services Peer Recovery Support Specialist Certification or WVCBAPP certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Knowledge of treatment resources including a working knowledge of the 12-Step Fellowships.
  • Ability to comply with WVU Medicine, WVU Research Corporation, UHA, and Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry safety procedures
  • Completion of HIPAA training and compliance (to be completed upon hire, with refresher courses as determined by administration).
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate effectively with patients and families, pharmaceutical company personnel, regulatory and monitoring agency personnel, internal staff members. Communicates with physicians, patients, students, and employees of WVU, WVU Medicine, and UHA.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution, solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to develop specific goals and plans, to prioritize, organize and accomplish tasks independently and through others.
  • Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintain them over time.
  • Skilled at working as a team member.
  • Skilled at written and oral communication.
  • Knowledge of basic computer applications: Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • WVCBAPP Peer Recovery Certification
  • Certificate of completion of the CCAR Recovery Coaching in the Emergency Department
  • Active participation in the recovery for two or more years and current active attendance at community recovery meetings

The WVURC was created as a not-for-profit corporation in 1985 to support research (R1) at West Virginia University. We provide evaluation, development, patenting, management, and marketing services for inventions of the faculty, staff and students of the University.
