JOB TITLE: Assistant General Manager

REPORTS TO: Feedlot General Manager

FLSA STATUS: Salaried, Ag Exempt

FUNCTION: Aides General Manager in completing operational requirements through delegation to management team; follows up on work results. Oversees and directs Feed Lot management team in absence of General Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sets a positive example for employees by modeling safe work practices and following safety rules and policies. Communicates critical safety information to employees by conducting regular safety training; monitors workplace for unsafe/noncompliant behavior.

  • Manages 5-6 subordinate managers. Shares responsibility in overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these individuals. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training management employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining management employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Develops subordinates' skills and encourages growth.

  • Develops management team by providing information, educational opportunities, and experiential growth opportunities. Provides a positive leadership example to subordinates by modeling professional behavior.

  • Serves as a resource to management team on employee issues and safety matters.

  • Coordinates the purchase of commodities (may include: corn, feeder cattle, proteins, supplements, liquids and other roughage sources) by keeping abreast of facility needs/preferences/Company position, and establishing rapport with outside suppliers.

  • Coordinates shipment of fed cattle to packer by identifying cattle ready to ship on a weekly basis and scheduling shipment.

  • Monitors operational activities to assure adherence to applicable State and Federal laws, Company policies and Company standards through open communications with management team.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Undergraduate degree in Animal Science, Ag Economics or related field; and 3 years related feedlot experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Supervisory Experience

  • Knowledge of basic business/accounting

  • Knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; and Database software.

  • Ability to multitask.

  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, rations, and proportions to practical situations.

COMPETENCY:

Expected to understand livestock and commodity markets, participate in meetings, lead a team effectively, coordinate projects, manage difficult or emotional employee situations, understand business implications of decisions, work within approved budget, develop and implement cost saving measures, conserve organizational resources, exhibit sound and accurate judgment, adapt to change in the environment, demonstrate knowledge of EEO policy and the ability to ensure continuance of facility operations in the absence of the General Manager.
