Performs all duties necessary to provide for the effective daily operation of all departmental services and programs. GENERAL SUMMARY:

Responsible for operation of Pharmacy department including planning, coordinating and supervising of all functions of the pharmacy (staffing, training, scheduling, and budgeting). Performs all duties necessary to provide for the effective daily operation of all departmental services and programs. Supervises pharmacy technicians and students/interns in all work areas as assigned.

ROLE DESCRIPTION:

The Manager is an integral member of the healthcare team providing leadership to staff. This position oversees the coordination of department activities and guides the delivery of safe, quality service. She/He is a resource, mentor and motivator for staff. The Manager serves as a liaison between personnel, administration, physicians and other departments to ensure optimal service.

QUALIFICATIONS / PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

B.S. Pharmacy from Program approved by American College of Pharmacy Educator (ACPE).

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Current Iowa Pharmacy License

EXPERIENCE:

Previous management experience preferred. 2 years staff pharmacist experience required. Hospital pharmacy experience is desirable.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS:

Computer and typing skills required. Communication skills required to promote strong interpersonal working relationships. Must be able to work effectively with a variety of people and promote team structure. Maintain interdepartmental and intradepartmental working relationships. Must be willing to keep up with new trends and developments as related to pharmacy.

PHYSICAL/COGNITIVE DEMANDS:

Spend up to 90% of the day walking or standing on hard surfaced floors. Minimum of lifting. Acceptable to working extended hours due to 24-hour on-call.




ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

· *Department specific Compliance Monitoring completed and reported as requested.

· *Annual budget completed and submitted within required time frames.

*Department specific Performance Improvement (QI) projects completed and reported on as required.

· *Department specific goals developed annually and summary of goal completion submitted as requested.

*Department policy and procedures developed and maintained – annual review conducted

· Maintains records of the transactions of the pharmacy as required by law and is necessary to maintain adequate control and accountability of all drugs.

· Has working knowledge of compliance issues (specific to job responsibilities), with regard to federal, state, and local laws/regulations. Job performance is consistent with regulatory guidelines; employee attends all required compliance educational sessions.

· Assists in the training and orientation of students.

· Interprets and evaluates all physicians’ medication and IV admixture orders with clarification as deemed necessary.

· Accurately compounds, labels, and dispenses medications to both inpatients and outpatients.

· Advises the prescriber, nurse and patient as required regarding the contents, therapeutic action utilization, and possible adverse reactions or interactions of drugs.

· Controls the disposition of narcotics, other scheduled drugs, dangerous drugs, and investigational drugs as required by state and federal regulations.

· Participates in all clinical programs as required, including patient rounds, dosage monitoring for compromised patients, admission drug histories, pharmacokinetic dosing, etc.

· Supervises the drug storage and preparation areas within the pharmacy and throughout the hospital.

· Initiates, develops, and carries out rules and regulations pertaining to policies of the department with the approval and cooperation of hospital administration and Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.

· Keeps abreast of current drug therapy. Reviews patient chart upon admission and makes appropriate recommendations to the physicians.

Work environment: Works primarily within Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Areas worked include, but are not limited to: pharmacy, patient care areas, storage areas. Normal work environment within the hospital is clean, temperature controlled, organized.

Employment variables/approximate hours*/misc. information: May require travel. Must be willing to respond to phone calls/other messages if necessary, outside of normal work hours. Must be willing and able to learn and maintain competencies on variety of equipment used to prepare, package, verify, and store all types of medications.
