Job Summary

Use power-operated machine tools to produce precision metal parts and components to exact specifications.  A machinist who can manually operate a multitude of manual and digital metalworking machinery to produce a part or component to a drawing is considered a Tool Room Machinist.  They review the part specifications, drawings and requirements and work primarily unsupervised to complete the task and/or fabricate parts by performing the following duties. 

Job Duties

·         Review and understand blueprints and specifications for machined and/or fabricated parts with special focus on stamping die components

·         Determine the sequence of steps to follow in production of the product and plan the production process, including where and how to cut the work piece, the correct tools and materials for the job.

·         When required develops specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated.

·         Follows safety regulations and reports safety violations to management.

·         Read and review engineering drawings, customer provided part drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.

·         Measures, marks, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.

·         Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, and grinders.

·         Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

·         Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.

·         Instructs trainees and new hires in machine set-up and operation.

·         Verify conformance of finished work piece to specifications.

·         Fit and assemble parts into complete assembly.

·         Confers with engineers, programmers, CNC machinists, wire operators or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

·         Instruct Trainees

Experience and Education

·         Perform work under direct supervision

·         Handle basic issues and problems and refer more complex issues to higher-level staff

·         Possess beginning to working knowledge of subject matter

·        High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 5 years experience as a Tool and Die Maker
