This Assistant Supervisor position at Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana (GCSI) is a result of the AbilityOne program in partnership with GCSI and the federal government, providing healthy operations and environments at local federal facilities. The AbilityOne program is one of the largest sources of employment in the United States for people who are blind or have significant disabilities. GCSI is one of about 500 non-profit organizations that provides employment opportunities in competitive, integrated environments at federal government locations.

The Assistant Supervisor oversees the various services offered by Goodwill Building and Ground Services (GBGS), the majority of tasks being lawn care related, but also includes light building maintenance, as well as assisting in the supervision of janitorial workers, as needed. Tasks include training employees, directing their work, ensuring satisfactory completion of work, inspections, addressing customer complaints, and resolving problems.

Example Duties and Activities

  • Supervises staff engaged in grounds maintenance activities such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, removing weeds, planting and caring for flowers, trees, and shrubs trimming, policing of grounds, edging of walks, raking, and disposing of leaves and refuse, and the application of pesticides and herbicides.

  • Ensures preventative maintenance of equipment and manages the inventory of supplies/equipment.

  • Trains employees on the use of equipment, simple maintenance tasks, and safety protocols.

  • Follows contractual obligations and quality control standards to meet customer service levels.

  • Plans and coordinates vendors' and subcontractors' activities and ensures quality performance.

  • Enforces safety regulations.

  • Hard to Very Hard Physical Work - Is able to spend time in excess of 8 hours standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and crouching. Uses hands to finger, handle, or feel; reaches with hands and arms. Can climb, balance, talk and hear. Has the ability to move and lift 25-50 pounds. Can manage frequent exposure to loud noise and temperature variations, including wet and/or humid conditions. Will be occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.

  • Visual Acuity - Has close, distance, peripheral, color vision abilities, and is able to adjust focus.

  • Background Screening - All candidates must pass a pre-employment background check. Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record that passes review.

  • Governmental Contract Responsibilities - Goodwill's Commercial Services division holds contracts for services at some federal government buildings. As a result, Covid vaccination, credit checks, and a Government Background Check may be required for employment.
