Job Title: Laboratory Supervisor

Reports to (Title): Administrator

Supervises: (Positions) Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists

I.Position Summary:

This position is responsible for supervising and coordinating, and participating in activities of personnel performing various

chemical, microscopic, serological, and bacteriologic tests to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease; performs

phlebotomies, performs general clerical work and operates lab computer.

II.Position Requirements:

A.Licensure/Certification/Registration: Current licensure as a Laboratory Supervisor by the Tennessee State Board ofHealth.

B.Education: Three years of college in a medical Technology program which is approved by the American Society of ClinicalPathologists, plus one year internship in an approved hospital, or qualification as a technologist by the State of TennesseeBoard of Health.

C.Experience: Six years of experience in a clinical laboratory as a technologist with forty-five hours of continuing educationin management, in addition to 15 hours of technical continuing education as required for licensure as a LaboratorySupervisor by the Tennessee State Board of Health.

D.Special qualifications: The person filling this position mush have the ability to verbally communicate well, must possessan appropriate manner, conduct, and ability to get along with people. Walking or standing most of the day is required. Somesitting, stooping and bending when performing phlebotomy and lab tests is also needed. Visual acuity required to readdetailed instructions and to examine specimens. Manual dexterity required for handling equipment, controls, and containersof reagents and specimens. Color discrimination and form perception required to analyze specimens. Lifts and carries lightlaboratory equipment and containers. Works inside and is exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens and toodorous chemicals and specimens.

III.Degree of Supervision Required: This position is expected to function with little or no supervision.

IV.Ages of Patients Served:

This position requires competence in assessment, treatment, and/or care for the age groups indicated. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training, or experience.
