Job Summary / Purpose:

MIU is seeking a dynamic and experienced Vice President of Financial Operations (VPFO). The VPFO will lead the financial management and budget planning of our institution. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the VPFO will play a critical role in ensuring the financial health and sustainability of MIU, while aligning financial strategies with our mission, objectives, and values.


This position provides strategic advice for the organization’s executive and senior leaders to support short- and long-term business objectives, establishing and implementing policies and practices to ensure operational effectiveness and fiscal responsibility, while upholding the regulatory and compliance standards at a state and federal levels.


Key Responsibilities:


1. STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP

  • Participate in institutional strategic planning processes, providing financial insights and recommendations to support MIU's growth and mission.
  • Drive the financial planning of the company by assessing its performance and potential risks.
  • Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and ensure cash availability for company operations.

2. FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS

  • Develop, implement, and monitor the annual budget, ensuring alignment with MIU's goals and objectives. Prepare long-term financial plans and forecasts.
  • Manage and mentor a team of finance professionals, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish and maintain financial policies and procedures for the company.
  • Prepare and present accurate and timely financial reports to the President, Board of Trustees, and other stakeholders, providing insights and recommendations for decision-making.
  • Oversee the preparation of all financial reporting to governmental agencies, ensuring timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and year-end closes.
  • Oversee the company’s finance IT system.

3. RISK MANAGEMENT

  • Identify and manage financial risks, implement policies and procedures to safeguard assets, and ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements, consulting with external auditors to ensure the regular audits are conducted. Training and development and performance management.

4. INVESTMENT AND CAPITAL STRATEGY

  • Manage company funds, overseeing the capital expenditure (CAPEX), investments and asset management.
  • Oversee cash flow, investment strategies, and banking relationships to optimize financial resources.
  • Advise on long-term business and financial planning.

5. STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT

  • Present financial reports to board members, stakeholders, executives, and clients in formal meetings.
  • Collaborate with development and fundraising teams to ensure financial sustainability through grant applications, donor relations, and fundraising campaigns.
  • Stay up to date with technological advances for business improvements and maintain a deep knowledge of the current market conditions.

Skill Requirements:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as presentation abilities.
  • Strong knowledge of non-profit financial regulations and compliance.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and working effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Advanced computer skills, including proficiency in financial software and reporting tools.
  • Strong analytical, strategic planning, and organizational skills.

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field. CPA, CMA or relevant professional certification is a plus.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably in higher education or the non-profit sector.
  • Strong financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and lead high-performing finance teams.
