Job Summary

Get outdoors and get paid! Teen/Tween Program Instructor II's play a vital role in assisting with physical activity, social interaction, and overall well-being within their community. You will assist the Program Instructor III in leading a group of teens and tweens throughout several outdoor adventures in and around the local region. The experiences you will be able to add to your resume, after one summer, are below, but not limited to:

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Youth Engagement: Assist with providing recreational programs and activities that align with the interests and preferences of teenagers to keep them engaged.
  • Mentorship: Serve as a positive role model and mentor, providing guidance and support for teenagers as they develop life skills and social abilities.
  • Conflict Resolution: Handle conflicts and disagreements among teenagers, promoting effective communication and conflict resolution techniques.
  • DEIB focused: Support the DEIB values (diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging) in all aspects of Teen Programs
  • Cultural Competency: Understand of the experiences and community issues affecting those marginalized in mainstream outdoor opportunities, such as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), and/or LGBTQIA+ communities and demonstrate the ability to work with people of diverse races, ages, genders, abilities, and economic backgrounds
  • Youth Development: Help lead activities that foster personal growth, leadership skills, and self-esteem among teenagers. Maintain a balance between providing autonomy and ensuring the safety and well-being of youth.
  • Safety Education: Educate teenagers about the importance of safety in recreational activities, including the use of protective gear and adherence to rules.
  • Open Communication: Encourage and model open and honest communication to build trust and rapport with teenagers, allowing them to express their thoughts and concerns.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with teammates, to enhance teenagers' recreational experiences and expand opportunities.
  • Evaluation and Feedback: Regularly gather feedback from teenagers, and share with your team.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Good verbal, written, and telephone communication skills are required.
  • Ability to interact courteously with the public to acknowledge both compliments and complaints.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated good judgement in problem solving and responding to customer needs.
  • Proficiency in standard computer software, such as Microsoft Office Suite applications Word, Excel and Outlook
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years of age, or older
  • At least one year of experience working with teens and/or tweens
  • Previous experience working outdoor settings
  • Knowledge of general hiking etiquette, LNT, and traversing the outdoors safely
  • Must successfully complete a thorough background check as required by the Child/Adult Abuse Information Act
Other

Hours of Work
8 hours per day between 7:45am-6:15pm. Monday - Thursday between, June 24 - August 23rd. Work schedule may fluctuate during periods of low attendance and poor weather days. Training Days and times will be scheduled in the beginning of June. The first of many orientations is scheduled for May 18th.
During adventures, attendance is extremely necessary for all staff positions. Staff are seasonal positions that support a mandatory staff to camper ratio. There is very little opportunity for scheduled days off throughout the summer.

Working Conditions & Physical Activities

  • Performs work in indoor and outdoor settings including multipurpose rooms, parks, playgrounds, beaches, trails, and recreation sites.
  • Exposure to extended periods of direct sunlight and/or cool and damp weather is possible. Exposure to insects and wildlife is possible when out on a trail in our region. Staff will receive training and other preventative measures upon hire.
  • The job requires frequent light lifting and carrying (15-20 lbs.) up to eight miles, and infrequent heavy lifting of up to 50lbs.
