The Matrix Sciences Laboratory in our Imperial Valley location supports the agricultural and environmental communities with a comprehensive range of agronomic testing capabilities and services.

This work provides analytical services for a wide array of local, national and international clients, including growers, fertilizer dealers, food processors, crop consultants, environmental engineers, government and academic researchers.

Role summary:

We are seeking a knowledgeable and client-focused Consulting Agronomist to join our team. The successful candidate will work closely with our clients, scheduling field sampling, providing expert advice on soil and plant health, as well as making nutrient recommendations.

What you’ll do:

  • Work closely with clients to understand their agricultural needs and objectives. Collect pertinent field data to include fertilizer application dates and amounts, irrigation dates and amounts, planting dates, and varieties.
  • Develop strong relationships with clients to ensure long-term business growth.
  • Schedule and conduct regular soil, plant tissue, and water samples to assess field health and nutritional status. Analyze samples for essential nutrient content, soil salinity, nematodes, and other environmental attributes.
  • Provide nutrient recommendations to clients based on the analysis of soil, plant samples, and recent fertilizer applications.
  • Prepare and provide guidance on the appropriate use of fertilizers and other soil amendments.
  • Provide a season-end agronomic/ economic report with details including yields, fertilizer amounts applied and recommended, irrigation frequency, and crop varieties to assist farmers with cropping strategies.
  • Utilize Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to compose and deliver reports to clients with findings and recommendations. Ensure all reporting is accurate and delivered promptly.
  • Install and monitor fields with the latest environmental sensors to assist growers with timing and amounts of irrigation water to maximize response to irrigation inputs.
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in agronomy and related fields. Regularly update knowledge and skills through professional development activities and continuing educational units.

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Soil Science, Crop Science, Ag Science or equivalent.
  • Certified Crop Advisor in California.
  • Preferred Certified Professional Agronomist.
  • Proficiency in MS teams and MS Excel
  • Knowledge of common soil amendments.
  • Knowledge of plant nutrition requirements for several crops.
  • Experience working with Imperial Valley Crops.
  • Knowledge of soil and plant tissue testing methods.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member.
  • Good physical strength and stamina to walk fields in SW desert conditions.
  • Ability to travel daily and out of town as needed.
