About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding our team and looking for Natural Resource Technicians with backgrounds in botany, ecology, wildlife biology, and/or environmental science to support our Salt Lake City, or Vernal, Utah offices. These are temporary, hourly positions that will support a variety of projects and field efforts throughout the Intermountain West.

Candidates local to Utah (or neighboring states), familiar with flora and fauna of Utah, with 4x4 truck, ATV, and trailer towing experience are strongly preferred.

The ability to pass a drug screening is REQUIRED.

What you will accomplish

  • Follow established scientific protocols to conduct wildlife, vegetation, and wetland field surveys, complete environmental inspections, wildlife and vegetation baseline studies, habitat assessments, noxious weed mapping, and reclamation monitoring
  • Collect reliable and accurate field data, including identification of fauna and flora
  • Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, species of interest, and associated landforms
  • Photograph and record appropriate habitat, species, and landforms
  • Operate SWCA vehicles, assure they will perform safely, and notify appropriate person if vehicle needs maintenance
  • Perform all work with a focus on safety in a remote field setting for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes, is required; the ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Minimum of B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or Natural Resource Management or similar field preferred
  • Experience with field-based scientific data collection and attention to detail
  • Must have experience with accurate data collection procedures and data entry QA/QC
  • Familiarity with Great Basin flora and fauna and wetland experience a plus
  • Ability to work long days in the field for extended periods of time (up to 10 days) in a safe and productive manner
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to travel and work remotely as required
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team with excellent team collaboration skills
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Word and Excel
  • Must have a valid driver license and a clean driving record
  • Ability to drive a 4-wheel-drive vehicle on rugged, back-country roads

An employee in this Salt Lake City office -based position can expect a salary of $18.50/hr. - $24.50/hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
