Position Description

At the Anoka County Highway Department, it is our vision to enhance and protect life by providing safe roads and eliminating traffic congestion. The department has immediate openings for multiple Seasonal Highway Maintenance Workers who will perform various duties. Some of the critical responsibilities of this position include doing various repairs on county roads along with performing maintenance and installing of guardrails, catch basins and manholes. Assist with flagging operations for roadway work being performed.

This is a seasonal, non-exempt, on-siteposition. Interviews will take place as applications are received for those selected to move forward in the hiring process.

Pay & Benefits

Work Location

  • This position will work at the Anoka County Highway Building located at 1440 Bunker Lake Blvd NW, Andover MN 55304.

  • Expected work hours are Monday - Friday 6:00 am - 2:30 pm or Monday- Thursday 6:00 am - 4:30 pm or Tuesday- Friday 6:00 am- 4:30 pm.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
These examples are not all-inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of the primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Seasonal Highway Maintenance Worker.

  • Perform labor work on roadways including paving, patching, and shouldering.

  • Maintenance and installation of guardrails, catch basins, and manholes.

  • Perform tree trimming throughout the Anoka County Highway system.

  • Flagging duties for roadway maintenance work zones which can include paving, patching, shouldering, and culvert installation duties.

  • Remove debris, trash, and other roadside hazards throughout the Anoka County Highway system.

  • Perform routine facility maintenance such as cleaning and washing trucks and other large equipment.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the time of hire.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, with or without accommodation.

  • Successfully pass criminal history and driver's license background check.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Safely work with hand and power tools

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Indoor and outdoor county work sites, including construction sites near high-speed/high-volume traffic, in all weather conditions

  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness

  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds

  • Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties

  • Cognitive abilities required include problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short- and long-term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills

  • Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity including repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, pushing, pulling, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment and materials

  • Regular lifting of 20-50 lbs., occasional lifting of up to 100 lbs.

  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to Construction equipment depending on assignment

  • Construction equipment may include but is not limited to hand and power tools, heavy equipment, painting/striping equipment, hydraulic post pullers, shovels, rakes, air compressors, cement mixers, chain saws, picks, sanders, ice steamers, brush chippers, curbing machines, overhead personal lift vehicles, electronic test equipment, high temperature materials (asphalt, bituminous oil, and crack-filler), weather appropriate gear, and personal protective equipment

  • Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle

  • Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock, fumes, airborne particles, prolonged vibration from machinery, and other hazards is possible while performing essential duties
