About this job

To ensure that resident care objectives are established and met and that the standards, policies and procedures in the department of nursing are consistent with the standards, policies and procedures of the long term care facility and the resident’s physicians.

Duties:

* Assume the authority, responsibility and accountability for functions and activities of the nursing staff, as well as the authority and responsibility to take all reasonable steps to ensure that the optimal quality care is delivered to the facilities residents.
* Interpret, implement and maintain facility, administrative and nursing objectives, policies and procedures with nursing staff routinely.
* Directly supervise and randomly monitor duties of Assistant Director of Nursing, , Treatment Nurse, Care Plan Assessment Coordinator, MDS Coordinator, C.N.A. Supervisor (where applicable..
* Make rounds daily and assign all necessary corrective measures to the appropriate staff.
* Direct and delegate management of licensed and ancillary personnel.
* Collaborate closely with the Assistant Director of Nursing in supervising, evaluating and counseling of nursing staff.
* Routinely review potential nursing applications, check references, interview and recruit nursing personnel as needed. Ensure completion of background checks upon hiring.
* Maintain written job descriptions and performance evaluations for licensed nursing personnel.
* Counsel, discipline and terminate departmental employees in accordance with facility policy, when necessary, documenting and coordinating such actions with the Administrator.
* Schedule and announce departmental meeting times, dates, places, etc. Provide direction to nursing staff through written standards, policies and procedures, nursing administration meetings, regularly scheduled staff meetings, and memos. Solicit advice from inter - departmental supervisors (as assigned) concerning the operation of the nursing department, identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or improvement of services.
* Ensure appropriate inservice programs are conducted and encourage nursing staff to attend outside conferences and workshops to aid in personal growth and development of staff members.
* Prepare nursing schedule, assessing staffing levels with regards to acuity, and controlling overtime.
* Submit employee incident reports to the Business office within twenty-four (24) hours after occurrence.
* Analyze and evaluate nursing and resident related services rendered in order to improve quality of care.
* Communicate with residents and their families as needed. Review complaints and grievances and make written/oral reports to the Administrator.
* Review Quality Indicators, at least monthly, to detect areas of concern. Be aware of sentinel events and ensure problem areas are being managed effectively.
* Coordinate obtaining nursing information for admission inquiries with Assistant Director of Nursing (or designee).
* Monitor and audit all admission/readmission charts on the first working day following admission. Assign and follow-up with appropriate staff regarding completion and correction of required information.
* Randomly audit medication passes by nurses quarterly.
* Review pharmacy recommendations and assign follow-through appropriately.
* Review resident weights and dietary recommendations before turning over to Quality Assurance Nurse for follow-up.
* Assign and participate in recapping of physician’s orders monthly, addressing medication errors, as found, and adding/deleting orders appropriately.
* Review all resident incidents and direct investigations as needed. Report appropriate incidents to IDPH as necessary.
* Attend Medicare and Care Plan meetings.
* Serve on various committees of the facility and provide written/oral reports as required by the committee’s guidelines and direction.
* Oversee IV supply inventory and ordering.
* Assume duties of Administrator in his/her absence.
* Rotate after hours on-call duties with designees, as assigned, for general staffing problems and minor resident or procedural concerns. Required to be on-call 24 hours a day / 7 days a week for resident and employee safety concerns.
* May be required to work the floor as a staff nurse, in the event of a nursing shortage.
* All other duties as assigned by Administrator.
