The Brookline Department of Water and Power seeks a Water Works Serviceperson to perform manual and customer service work responding to emergency telephone calls and related service work; other related work as required.

Working hours for this position are Wednesday-7 AM-3 PM, Thursday and Friday-3-11PM and Sunday 7 AM-11PM

Essential Functions:

  • Respond to telephone requests, complaints and inquiries related to broken water pipes in homes, leaking water, colored water, poor water pressure, flooded cellars, installing connections and other problems related to water distribution and wastewater collection; maintain call logs for service response and storm-related requests; dispatch calls during emergencies.
  • Provide lists of approved plumbers and contractors; shut off broken fountains and sprinklers in playgrounds; respond to calls from the fire department relating to the opening of fire hydrants and shutting down fire sprinkler mains; respond to calls from the police department regarding damaged fire hydrants.
  • Turn service mains on and off for repairs and installation of new meters; respond to calls from construction sites for construction meters; respond to dig safe calls to mark out services and mains for other utilities.
  • Respond to sewer problems such as sewer and storm drain back-ups; assist with problems, such as lost keys or animals in catch basins.
  • Notify supervisor when emergency situations require additional personnel; shovel and plow snow around public buildings, paths and bridges; place barricades and "no parking" signs for work sites.
  • Perform internal maintenance duties, such as washing cars and trucks, checking oil and water in vehicles, cleaning track drains in garage, cleaning office floors, counters, windows and re-stocking restrooms.
  • Perform similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.

Qualifications
High school diploma; two to three years' experience working in a water and sewer department, or related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a valid Class D driver's license and good communication and mechanical skills.
