Correctional Deputy Sheriff/Dispatcher I:

Under supervision, to work in a training capacity, learning to supervise inmates at the County Detention Facility and maintain Facility security; to learn procedures and methods for the care, custody, and confinement of inmates; to oversee work details and leisure activities; to learn to receive and dispatch non-emergency and emergency radio and telephone communications to law enforcement, emergency medical, and other public safety personnel as Public Safety Answering Point for the 911 System ; to maintain field communications during incidents; to perform general office support assignments; and to do related work as required.

Correctional Deputy Sheriff/Dispatcher II:

Under general supervision, to supervise inmates at the County Detention Facility according to laws, regulations, and policies of the Sate of California and Trinity County; to enforce Facility rules and maintain Facility security; to be responsible for the care, custody, and confinement of inmates during an assigned shift; to oversee work details and leisure activities; to receive and dispatch non-emergency and emergency radio and telephone communications to law enforcement, emergency medical, and other public safety personnel as Public Safety Answering Point for the 911 System ; to maintain field communications during incidents; to perform general office support assignments; and to do related work as required.

Correctional Deputy Sheriff/Dispatcher I:

CORRECTIONAL DUTIES: Assists with supervision of inmates in the County Detention Facility; may oversee inmates during leisure time activities and on work details; checks work areas to insure that inmates are working on assigned projects; sees that facilities, cells, and grounds are kept sanitary; conducts periodic block checks; learns procedures and performs searches of inmates; performs searches of cells and other areas for contraband; maintains discipline among inmates; opens and censors incoming mail; maintains and updates Detention Facility records; responds to inquiries regarding inmate detention and Detention Facility policies within constraints of Department regulations; learns to receive and book inmates; learns fingerprinting and takesphotographs; learns to assign prisoners to cells according to the Facility classification plan; learns requirements and releases prisoners on proper authorization, returning personal property and clothing; may testify in court and before disciplinary boards; delivers pre-packaged medications, according to specific instructions; learns methods and procedures and investigates incidents and violations of rules at the facility for disciplinary reports and possible citation or arrest; collects and secures evidence; may transport inmates to and from court, medical appointments, and other institutions; supervises inmates and visitors during visiting hours; serves warrants; operates a centralized control system controlling access and movement in the Facility.

DISPATCHING DUTIES: Answers the telephone, receiving and classifying calls; learns and exercises basic responsibility in determining priority of response and dispatching appropriate Emergency Medical and other Public Safety units, according to availability, assigned geographic area, and location, to non-emergency and emergency calls; maintains field communications for public safety checks, and during emergencies and incidents; transfers emergency calls to other agencies as warranted; monitors various public safety radio channels, and coordinates efforts in dispatching personnel and equipment; maintains records/logs of calls for services, radio transmissions, and telephone messages using the computer; establishes chain of custody/evidence of communications dispatcher records; enters and clears information on the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems (CLETS) to assist personnel with calls; operates the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD);sends, receives, and decodes teletype information; enters and tracks restraining orders into local, state & national data base systems; coordinates interagency law enforcement communications using telephone radio and computer with emergency medial and public safety activities; processes warrants; updates daily dispatching logs; performs a wide variety of general office assistance assignments; operates dispatching, office equipment, and computers; provides information to other staff and the public.

Desirable Qualifications

Correctional Deputy Sheriff/Dispatcher I:

Knowledge of:

Basic knowledge of correctional procedures and inmate control problems. Good public relations techniques. First aid methods and techniques. The general geography of Trinity County. Modern office methods and procedures.

Ability to:

Learn the purposes, methods, and procedures for the care and custody of inmates at the Trinity County Detention Facility. Learn to perform a variety of corrections work. Learn the proper operation and care of telephone, CLETS, computer terminal and voice radio equipment used by the County. Learn the operating policies, procedures, and functions of the Communications Department for receiving, disseminating and processing various types of information for emergency and non-emergency calls for service. Learn the laws, codes, and regulations related to transmission and reception of public safety communications. Learn to operate radio communications, computerized systems, and teletype equipment. Read, understand, and interpret laws and regulations regarding operation of the County Detention Facility and dispatching activities and the care and custody of inmates.Gather and organize data and information. Interview and secure information from people. Make independent judgments and adopt quick, effective, and responsible courses of action during emergencies.Think clearly and act calmly in emergency situations. Evaluate situations and respond appropriately. Prepare clear, comprehensive reports. Meet standards of adequate physical stature, endurance, and agility. Learn technical and tactical proficiency in the use and care of firearms if necessary. Work with computerized law enforcement information systems. Operate a keyboard and/or typewriter with sufficient skill to perform booking and report preparation assignments and to enter and extract a variety of data and information. Perform a variety of office support work. Take and transmit clear and complete directions and information. Effectively, tactfully, and courteously represent the Sheriff Department with the public and other law enforcement agencies. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Training and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Some previous work experience with a correctional system or in a position having substantial public contact is highly desirable.

Special Requirements:

Completion of a Basic Jail Operations Course approved by S.T.C. must be accomplished within 12 months of initial employment.

Completion of P.C. 832 and weapons training is required within 12 months of initial employment.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California Driver's License.

Correctional Deputy Sheriff/Dispatcher II:

Knowledge of:

Operating policies, procedures and regulations of the Trinity County Sheriff Department for the Detention Facility and Communication Department. State and Federal laws and regulations related to jail operations, booking procedures and custody of inmates and the transmission/reception of public safety communications. Proper operation and care of telephone, CLETS, computer terminal and voice radio equipment used by the County. Problems related to the care and custody of inmates. Recent court decisions affecting arrest procedures and the handling of suspects and detained persons. Use and care of Department authorized equipment and firearms as assigned. Good public relations techniques. First aid methods and techniques. Computers and software used by the County Detention Facility and Communication Department. The general geography of Trinity County. Modern office methods and procedures.

Ability to:

Perform a wide variety of correctional work and radio communications. Operate radio communications, computerized systems, and teletype equipment. Read, understand, and interpret laws and regulations regarding operation of the County Detention Facility and dispatching activities and the care and custody of inmates.Gather and organize data and information. Training and Experience:

One (1) year of previous professional law enforcement experience comparable to that of a Correctional Deputy/Dispatcher I in Trinity County.

Special Requirements:

Completion of a Basic Jail Operations Course approved by S.T.C.

Completion of P.C. 832 and weapons training.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California Driver's License.

Completion of the Basic Dispatcher Course and possession of a Dispatcher Certification from P.O.S.T.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sit for extended periods, generally up to three hours if dispatching; frequently stand and walk; maintain mental alertness during periods of inactivity; ability to stoop, kneel, and bend over; sufficient manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing in excess of 100 lbs with assistance; physical ability to sustain extra physical effort for a substantial period of time and restrain prisoners; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX as well as radio communication and dispatching equipment.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an office and outdoor environment; work is performed in a variety of temperatures and weather conditions; unusual exposure to life threatening situations; continuous contact with inmates, other staff and the public.

$3,575.92 - $4,792.07* / Month

$3,910.92 - $5,241.01* / Month
$22.56 - $30.23* / Hour

* The rate of pay of a county employer shall correspond with the letters A, B, C, D, E, F and G respectively, which denote the various steps in the salary range. Steps "F" & "G" steps are based on longevity: "F" step is upon completion of seven years of continuous service and 2.5 years at "E" step, "G" step is upon completion of 10 years of continuous service and 3 years at "F" step .
