The Role

We're looking for a detail-oriented and driven individual to work in our Finance department as a Senior Accountant. Reporting to our Accounting and Budgeting Manager, you are responsible for processing and maintaining the Company's investment accounting function and assisting in the preparation of the GAAP and statutory financial reports. You will also assist in the examination by outside financial auditors and support the loss and premium analysis, month-end close, and reinsurance reporting.

Key Result Areas

Investment Accounting

  • Prepare and reconcile the monthly investment reports, analyses, and journal entries
  • Coordinate investment accounting process with outsourced investment accounting firm and investment managers and advisors

Other Accounting

  • Complete the monthly premium and loss journal entries, reconciliations, and reports
  • Complete the monthly premium tax journal entry
  • Prepare the company's premium tax returns and estimated quarterly payments to the various state insurance departments
  • Complete the monthly reinsurance premium and loss journal entries and reports
  • Complete and reconcile the monthly agent commission reports
  • Run third-party administrator claim reports and invoices, review and send to appropriate policyholders

Financial Reporting

  • Assist in statutory financial reporting compliance with the NAIC, A.M Best, and various state insurance departments
  • Assist in audits completed by outside financial examiners
  • Prepare lead schedules and assist with the preparation of GAAP and STAT workpapers and audit reports
  • File medical malpractice reports to the applicable states

Budgeting

  • Assist with the development of the direct expense, rent, depreciation budgets, and other items as needed

Financial Analysis

  • Assist with the operating expense reports and analysis and compare to budget and prepare memos for senior leadership describing any significant variances
  • Prepare monthly premium and loss analysis reports and explain any significant variances to management
  • Track and maintain the policy retention and new business reports
  • Ensure data integrity on existing reports
  • Work with the IT department on developing new reports as needed

Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel along with working knowledge of MS Word
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while meeting deadlines
  • Highly detail-oriented and organized
  • Ability to readily understand client/server-based core operating systems
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving skills

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is required
  • Two (2) to four (4) years of accounting and financial reporting experience in the property and casualty insurance industry is preferred
  • Prior experience with insurance accounting software applications and insurance company statutory reporting is preferred
