Primary purpose:

The Intern will work alongside Tallgrass Mechanics to learn the installation, operation and maintenance of gas and/or liquid pipeline, terminal, pump, and compression related facilities, and/or natural gas liquid processing plants. The internship is intended to help an individual develop their work skills and knowledge while providing a link between their educational goals and career objectives.

The goal of this internship is to transition to full-time employment at Tallgrass in the future. The duration of the internships is approximately 12 weeks during the summer.

Learn how to:

Monitor and control process variables, such as pressure, temperature, and flow rates to efficiently achieve desired operating results.

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul and repair rotating and reciprocating compression equipment.
  • Start, stop and operate engines/pumps and other equipment to maintain designated operating parameters.
  • Assist in the planning and performance of maintenance and repairs on compressors, engines, turbines, auxiliary equipment, pumps, process controls, and related equipment.
  • Monitor quality of product to ensure meeting specifications and takes appropriate actions when out of specification product is identified.
  • Monitor or directly transfer product to ground storage above or below and through the pipeline system. Learn how to communicate effectively with company control centers, business groups and other operating groups as necessary. Learn about the general upkeep and maintenance of all facilities and equipment.
  • Oversee the construction, maintenance and/or security activities performed by third parties. Identify report and correct safety and environmental concerns.
  • Represent the Company during contacts with landowner/tenants and public officials/emergency officials.
  • Perform all work in compliance with Company standards, procedures, and regulatory and tariff requirements.
  • Complete appropriate documentation and paperwork.
  • Actively participate in safety and security program and initiatives.

Minimum requirements:

Education:

  • High School Diploma.
  • Student actively enrolled in an Diesel Mechanics or other Mechanics program with an expected graduation date of May 2023, December 2024, or May 2025.

Experience/Specific Knowledge:

  • Experience using MS Office applications that may include but are not limited to Excel, Word, SharePoint, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Certifications, Licenses & Registrations:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers (for travel).

Competencies, Skills & Abilities:

  • Begin to understand Operations & Maintenance procedures, Site Specific Procedures, project scopes and work plans.
  • Gain familiarity with pipeline regulations and operations.
  • Maintain a regular, dependable attendance and a consistently high level of performance.
  • Maintain a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of company assets and employees, and the general public.
  • Other daily, weekly, monthly or special project duties as identified and defined.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to perform basic repairs and required maintenance using special tools and equipment following Technical Manual procedures OR Current knowledge of and use of hand tools and power tools
  • Ability to collect, organize, interpret, and present data with quality and accuracy.
  • Must be able to take direction from supervisor(s), keep required work schedule, focus attention on details, and follow work rules.
  • Strong focus on safe work practices.

  • Must be able to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions, climb vertical access ladders and stairwells, carry up to 50 pounds and to see, hear, walk and talk effectively.
  • Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • The employee is regularly required to use hands to type, touch, handle, or feel. The employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work outdoors in project & maintenance activities.
  • The successful candidate will be required to clear a drug screen and a complete background check, including a credit report for certain positions, after an offer has been extended and prior to being employed.
