Career Opportunity
The City of Las Vegas Youth Development and Social Initiatives department is seeking qualified teachers/instructors for our ReInvent After-school Program (RAP). This program is comprised of students in grades K-5. The no-cost RAP, funded by the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant, offers students a broad array of support services and activities before and after school. RAP is designed to reinforce and complement in-school curriculum through providing activities that promote student success. The RAP sites will provide academic growth opportunities and enrichment activities, along with family engagement programming. Enrollment is limited. Attendance requirements will apply for participating students.

Hourly: 8 hours per week

Duties include:
The teacher/instructor will provide individualized and group instruction to selected student participants in the grant funded 21st Century Community Learning Centers program at his/her designated RAP site. The teacher/instructor will work with the site coordinator and program staff to plan and implement each component of the extended learning program. The teacher/instructor will monitor student progress and implement curriculum based on student needs. The teacher/instructor will be responsible for benchmark and progress monitoring data and reporting those results to parents and the site coordinator.
The RAP students receive daily instruction in core subject areas as well as the opportunity to participate in enrichment activities. Weekly lesson plans will incorporate different components, as required by the grant, examples include: project-based learning, learning through literature and math, and S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) curriculum, etc. Qualified candidates will be expected to carry out the teaching duties required as well as participate in enrichment/recreational activities with the RAP staff.

Supervision Received
Receives general supervision from higher level supervisory or management staff.


SELECTION PROCESS:
Final candidate selection may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the requirements of the job." Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Tutors students
  • Helps students with homework
  • Supplements tutoring/homework help with educational activities
  • Create a classroom culture that encourages group thinking, curiosity and discovery
  • Collaborate with staff to design and implement integrated lessons with a strong S.T.E.A.M emphasis
  • Incorporate school curriculum for students
  • Communicate with students, parents, staff and student's daytime classroom teacher
  • Implement daily expectations and behavior system
  • Commitment to total classroom engagement
  • Develop individual, small group, and large group academic lesson plans appropriate for students in the RAP program.
  • Teach and evaluate academic lessons.
  • Maintain contact with each child's classroom school teacher on a monthly basis, in person, or via telephone or email, to coordinate afterschool lessons with classroom teacher curriculum and review reading and math progress.
  • Establish liaison with the teacher and work under the teacher's direction, if necessary to assist the student.
  • Help students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying.
  • Help students develop self-confidence, raise self-concept, and reduce anxiety of fear of failure in academic work.
  • Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas.
  • Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.
  • Assist in designing and implementing cooperative projects.
  • Be responsible for maintaining records on each student who is being tutored, including follow-up and periodic assessment. Keep a record of student response and progress. Complete case note records monthly. Provide evaluations and other reports as requested by the 21st CCLC grant.
  • Collect and record program evaluation (Pre/Posttests, test scores, etc.) information as assigned.
  • Ensure that confidentiality of records and information is maintained at all times.
  • Participate in training as assigned. Continually enhance and develop one's own professional skills through participation in internal training programs.
  • Attend any special events/meetings coordinated by the afterschool program.
  • Any other necessary duties as assigned



MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Experience:

Experience working with students in a classroom setting
Experience writing and completing lesson plans
Excellent oral communication skills
Knowledge of current educational research
Strong classroom management and organization

Training:

Bachelor's Degree, Elementary Education (preferred) or Substitute License
