Chief of Police

The City of Henry is seeking an experienced and skilled leader as our community’s next Chief of Police. The Henry Police Department has a strong reputation for providing community-oriented law enforcement services by focusing on collaborative partnerships. The City of Henry is a non-home rule municipality, with a population of 2,400 residents located 25 miles south of Interstate 80 and 35 miles north of Peoria, at the intersection of IL Route 29 and IL Route 18 in Marshall County along the beautiful Illinois River. The Chief of Police is the appointed chief executive officer position of the department and the final departmental authority on all matters of policy, operations, and discipline.

The Chief is responsible for:

• Leading by example.

• Planning and budgeting of department resources.

• Directing, scheduling, training, and maintaining staff proficiency.

• Coordinating and controlling all department functions and activities, both internal and external.

• Communicating regularly with the Mayor and Council’s Police and ESDA Committee Chairperson.

The Chief of Police reports to the Mayor and the City Council and supervises 3 full-time unionized patrolmen, 5 part-time patrolmen, and one full-time administrative assistant. Candidates must have:

• Strong management and leadership skills.

• Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to thoughtfully represent the interests of the Department and the City.

• A minimum of ten (10) years of current experience as a sworn officer within a law enforcement agency.

• A minimum of three (3) years of experience in a supervisory capacity.

• Willingness to implement a high level of community and interdepartmental engagement.

• Required qualifications include State Certified Peace Officer certified by the Illinois Local Government Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, have an associate degree in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field. A bachelor’s degree would be preferred.

• A valid driver’s license with a safe record and a valid Firearms Owners Identification (FOID) card.

The annual starting salary range is $72,000 - $75,000, commensurate with a candidate’s qualifications and experience. Benefits include Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), paid holidays, as well as medical/dental/vision insurance, and a take home squad car once residency is established. Residency is required within one (1) year of hire within the corporate limits of Henry.
