Code Blue Procedures for IM Hospitalists

Evanston Hospital

  •  The on call floor house staff team is first responder to RRT, day or night.
The ICU house staff team/floor house staff team/intensivist are the first responders to code blues, day or night. attend code blues on any patient to offer assistance, day or night.
Hospitalists are definitely expected to go to RRT/code blues on our own patients, day or night.

Glenbrook Hospital

Code blue and rapid response teams are multidisciplinary, including ICU team and floor house staff.
Hospitalists are alerted when the code is on one of our patients and the covering hospitalist is expected to attend such cases.

Highland Park Hospital

Nights, weekends, and holidays - the hospitalist responds to all RRT and code blue (even private non-hospitalist patients) and go to the adolescent psych unit for emergencies

The intensivist is in the hospital from 7:30 AM-5:30 PM Monday-Friday and will go to codes during that time.
An EPIC note should be written; you can bill for critical care time, and if it is a private patient, call the PCP to discuss/update the PCP. If a private patient is transferred to the ICU, the private PCP should be responsible for the follow up care of the patient (unless they ask to transfer the patient to hospitalist service (which really doesnt happen).
The intensivists are available to contact and come into the hospital if you need assistance.

Skokie Hospital
Skokie nocturnists run all RRTs and Codes for all patients. Once the transfer to ICU occurs, the private physician is supposed to assume care with the intensivists as consultants but in reality the immediate care even after ICU transfer is done by the nocturnists. If the transferred patient is one of ours, then nocturnist takes care of the patient in the ICU.

During the day, the pager person responds to all codes and RRTs in the hospital. If we arrive at the code and Intensivist is already running the code, etc., then we can leave but this policy was set so that there is a physician always present during these events.

Usually the intensivist is in house from 7am to 5pm weekdays.
