Job Summary

As a member of the Getty Foundation's leadership team and reporting to the Director of the Foundation, the Associate Director will be responsible for overseeing and enhancing, as needed, an effective local, national, and international grantmaking strategy for the organization. The successful candidate will be someone experienced in philanthropy who fosters teamwork, cultivates a culture of service, and can align policies and organizational systems to accomplish the programmatic mission of the Foundation.

The Foundation is working to expand into additional areas of interest, including sustainability and the arts, expanded partnerships, and new approaches to grantmaking. In partnership with the Director, the Associate Director will develop and deliver a strategy for this new era of grantmaking and provide leadership and guidance to the program staff. The Associate Director will also be responsible for establishing evaluation and learning processes to assess the impact of the Getty Foundation's grant initiatives and will contribute to Getty-wide strategic priorities, working with staff across the institution. To be successful, the Associate Director must be flexible and change-oriented, building on the Foundation's past while embracing its future, and capable of conveying a compelling vision for new initiatives and directions that is fully embraced by staff, grantees, and other constituents.

Major Job Responsibilities
    Serve as an active member of the Foundation's leadership team.
  • Provide leadership for local, national, and international grantmaking to ensure successful integration of the Foundation's strategic grantmaking framework.
  • Act as a close thought partner to the Director.
  • Identify and cultivate new networks and relationships that closely align with Getty's overall strategic priorities.
  • Prepare and propose the division's annual grant and operating budget to the Foundation director.
  • Be responsible for overall direction, review, and approval of grant and administrative budgets within areas of responsibility.
  • Partner with the Foundation's administrative lead to review and refine the annual budgeting process.
  • Work closely with the Foundation's grant administration team and Getty legal department on legal, compliance, and tax issues.
  • Ensure all staff within areas of responsibility understand Getty's and Foundation's mission, vision, and overall direction, goals, strategies, and core values.
  • Facilitate open, honest, transparent communication, sharing of information, and conflict resolution both within areas of responsibility and across the organization.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years at a senior level in philanthropy, non-profit, or educational institutions that includes significant experience in grant-making and roles that include strategy, leadership, and decision-making.
  • Graduate degree in arts & humanities or a related field; equivalent combination of education and professional experience will also be considered.
  • Fluency in one or more foreign languages a plus, as it is beneficial in international grant-making.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated experience or detailed knowledge of grantmaking and foundation management in a multifaceted organization, preferably in higher education or other relevant settings in the humanities, culture, art, advanced research, or conservation.
  • Strong knowledge base and passion for visual arts and proven commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Oustanding abilities in strategic leadership and operational management/administration.
  • Highly developed communication skills.
  • Must have solid analytical, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills;
  • The ability to innovate and with capacity to create or seize opportunities to improve grantmaking effectiveness and impact.
