Position Description:

We are seeking a talented Electrical Engineering student for a summer internship to support the HUS Operations Department located in our Dallas, TX office. This is a paid summer internship opportunity with housing provided if needed.

Under the guidance of multiple experienced engineers, the successful applicant will be involved in substation design, system relaying and protection, and transmission project support. Substation design typically includes learning about physical design, electrical design, relaying, and grounding. System relaying and protection include station relaying, transmission relaying, and coordination studies. Successful candidates will also have the opportunity to work on one special project supporting Sharyland's electric transmission system and operations, including:

  • PowerBaseTM Deployment: PowerBaseTM is an enterprise asset and test management system that integrates power system engineering and maintenance data into a central database in support of the interfacing and automation of office-to-field processes.
  • ProjectWise Deployment: ProjectWise is an enterprise document/drawing management system that enforces consistency in design delivery, system/asset portfolio intelligence, data governance, and engineering standards across the entire lifecycle of a system or asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of an experienced engineer, identify, collect, and analyze asset management and operations data
  • Prepare engineering and operational analysis, designs, and reports
  • Assist the team with developing relay testing databases
  • Research and evaluate engineering and operational deliverables such as reports, drawings, specifications, and studies

Required Degree Background:

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited university
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy and the ability to learn new computer software efficiently
  • A candidate that is interested in the electric utility industry
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship

Desired Education/Experience:

  • Successful completion of junior-level power system courses covering topics such as three-phase power, load flow and reactive compensation, protective relaying, symmetrical components, transmission line theory, power system transients, dynamic stability, and power system electromagnetics is a plus!
  • Attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills will be critical for the successful completion of tasks
  • Prior internship and/or related engineering experience is a plus
  • Students who have passed or are scheduled to take the FE/EIT exam will be strongly considered for this position
  • Familiarity with design, drafting, or engineering software such as MATHCAD, SOLIDWORKS, AUTOCAD, etc. as well as Microsoft Excel is beneficial
