About this job

Part-time 28 hour per week evening shifts from 3:00 pm - 11:30 pm - 8 hour shifts with every other weekend and holiday.  Weekend shifts is during the day 7:00 am - 3:30 pm).   


Summary:

Provide leadership and coordination of all Hospital departments during evening and night hours in order to facilitate the functioning of the Hospital as a synergistic harmonious and integrated environment in which the mission vision and values of Newport Hospital will be fulfilled. In the absence of Hospital Department Managers and Administrators oversee the operation of all Hospital departments and interpret and enforce Hospital policies. Assist the Nursing Staff through clinical consultation coordination of the particular nursing resources available and assists in the provision of nursing care to patients of all ages including neonates infants children adolescents adults and geriatric patients as needed. Case management when needed.

Responsibilities:
Maintains current BLS and ACLS certification.

Coordination of Patient Care

Ensures the utilization of the nursing process by all staff members.

Demonstrates an understanding of Nursings Mission Vision and Values.

Demonstrates an understanding of Nursing Professional Practice Model and the role of the Registered Nurse in providing Relationship Based Care.

Makes rounds to review work activity on nursing units and serves as a resource to staff.

Assists in the provision of nursing care to patients of all ages including neonates infants children adolescents adults and geriatric patients as needed.

Foresees potential problems and intervenes to offset adverse impact.

Consults with Admitting regarding placement of patients. Functions in the absence of case management when needed.

Provides for services not available during night hours e.g. Medical Records Pharmacy and SSPD.

Notifies unit/department leadership of all critical events.

Leadership

Collaborates with nursing management to ensure that the departments scope of services strives to meet the needs and expectations of internal and external customers.

Creates a shared vision by developing and continuously communicating the Nursing Divisions goals in alignment with the hospitals mission.

Demonstrates flexibility and innovation to facilitate the changes required to improve operations or to enhance revenue effectiveness productivity responsiveness and other quality factors.

Demonstrates ability to respond to and provide direction on changing workload during crises and emergency situations.

Serves as an advocate of the hospital.



Human Resource Management & Development

Demonstrates knowledge of employee relations policies and procedures and implements policies in a fair equitable and consistent manner.

Assesses manpower needs including number of staff skill mix and authorizes reassignment and replacement of staff and overtime to meet needs.

Assists nursing management to assess the competence of employees upon hire transfer and on an annual basis.

- Assessment considers age-specific needs of patients.

Communicates clear performance expectations.



KEY FUNCTIONS

Provides input to department directors for ongoing performance assessment.

- Provides recognition of staffs achievements

- Counsels employees in a proactive fashion to sustain or improve job performance.

- Provides or recommends disciplinary action that is fair objective timely and developmental.

Promotes opportunities for teamwork among all staff.

Promotes employees participation in problem-solving and decision-making in matters affecting them.

Collaborates with department directors to assess and analyze competency patterns and learning/educational needs of staff based on supporting data.

Facilitates the orientation and education of nursing staff on the evening/night shifts and orients new employees to divisional policies and procedures.

Develops and participates in inservice education programs for the Nursing Division.

Serves as instructor (as qualified) and provides training to clinical staff for certification classes such as BLS and ACLS.

Develops an ongoing department education and training plan which encompasses safety issues competency and continual improvement processes which can be linked to department goals.



Financial Management

Monitors staffing to ensure the optimal use of scheduled time and overtime for maximum productivity.

Assists with cost containment by encouraging use of benefit time during periods of low census and/or low workload.



Information Management

Ensures the security and confidential treatment of sensitive and private information.

Demonstrates ability to utilize computer technology for data generation retrieval analysis and documentation.



Management of Physical/Tangible Assets

Maintains assigned physical/tangible assets safely efficiently and in such a manner that they effectively perform their intended function.

Prevents the loss or abuse of assigned assets.

Demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of department-specific safety issues.

Assists nursing management to develop plan and manage processes to measure assess and improve the quality of services in alignment with the hospitals key functions.

Participates in functional and cross-functional continual improvement activities.

Utilizes continual improvement tools and identifies indicators to assess and improve systems and processes over time.

Assists nursing managers to monitor and evaluate results of continual improvement activities for effectiveness.

Assists nursing management to incorporate/integrate improvements into processes and systems.



Communication

Demonstrates effective presentation skills for meetings and formal presentations.

Demonstrates effective writing skills for correspondence reports and other documents.

Other information:

Qualifications:

Bachelors Degree in Nursing required. Three to five years Clinical Nursing experience in an acute healthcare setting with demonstrated leadership skills and clinical knowledge. Graduate from a school of nursing


Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.


Current BLS
Current ACLS Certification.



Physical Requirements:

Must be able to sit stand walk bend twist and squat 1-3 hours per day walk 3-7 hours per day and lift 25-50 lbs with good body mechanics. Must be able to use both hands/wrists and perform work with moderate deviation and fine motor skills. Far and near vision must be accurate at 20/20 accurate depth perception discriminate among colors and hear whispers at 20 feet.
