Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic

ROMCO is currently seeking talented and driven heavy equipment field mechanics to join the team supporting the the Carrollton, TX branch operations.

ROMCO sells and supports products from Volvo (motor graders, wheel loaders, articulated haul trucks, excavators, backhoe loaders and skid steer loaders), Hitachi (excavators, mining shovels and rigid haul trucks), Ingersoll Rand (compaction and road development equipment), Blaw Knox (asphalt pavers), Waldon (paving sweepers) and GOMACO (concrete paving technology).

Job Purpose

The Heavy Equipment Field Mechanic is responsible for the repair of construction machines, component assemblies, and parts in the shop and field, including diagnosing, parts ordering, technical report writing, warranty reporting, maintaining care of company assets, and proper communication with others. This position reports to and is under general supervision of the Shop Foreman.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Repair equipment and components, including
• Development of a repair plan and sequence
• Determining necessary parts, materials, tooling, etc.
• Performing repairs properly and safely, with proper quality assurance testing of repair component or system and machine
• Maintain and complete all necessary reports legibly and in a timely fashion for parts ordering, special tooling usage, daily service reports, and work order closure
• Communicate progress of repair with direct supervisor as required
• Retrieve & return of parts and/or materials through Company’s parts ordering system
• Retrieve & return of special tools through Company’s Tool Room. Maintain proper care and use of special tools including major shop equipment, such as but not limited to, air compressor, cleaning tanks, overhead and jib cranes, etc.
• Use Company vehicle, service truck, and fuel cards properly including notifying supervisor immediately of any issues with the vehicle
• Maintain work area and/or service vehicle in a safe and clean manner
• Maintain tools & tool carrier in a safe, productive and updated manners
• Adhere to all company policies and procedures
• Other duties and projects as assigned

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability Requirements Operation and maintenance requirements of heavy duty construction equipment

• Hazards and Safety precautions of trade
• The care and use of hand and power tools employed in all phases of heavy equipment mechanical maintenance and repair work
• The use of servicing equipment such as A/C recycler, hydraulic jack, or emission analyzer
• Ability to diagnose defects in heavy equipment
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Possess strong and effective customer service skills
• Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and integrity
• Display excellent judgement at all time

Education and Experience 

Ideal candidates will possess a minimum of three to five years hands-on equipment repair experience and/or an equivalent mixture of education and experience.

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Associate Degree in Diesel or Equipment Technology or four (4) Years of apprenticeship experience preferred​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
• Minimum three to five years of related experience

Physical Demands, Working Conditions and Additional Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be alert and is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds long distances (more than 20 feet). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. This position routinely requires use of personal or company vehicles on company business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
