Job Description


Job Title: Primary Care Physician

Department: Patient Services

Supervisor: Medical Director

Location: The position will work in Washington, DC and Hyattsville, MD will be working in both locations.

Classification: Exempt/Salary


Synopsis: Under the general direction of the Medical Director, the Primary Care Physician will be responsible for treating patients within the age range corresponding to their professional discipline regardless of gender, providing general primary care, including routine health examinations and preventive screening, as well as management of acute and chronic medical conditions. They will also assist in supervising the services given by mid-level providers and ancillary staff in order to ensure high quality care in a team-based model of health care delivery.


Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:

  • MD or DO from an accredited Medical or Osteopathic School
  • Board Certification with American Board of Internal Medicine, American Board of Pediatrics or American Board of Family Medicine unless exempted in accordance with La Clínica Del Pueblo policy
  • Current licensure to practice medicine in the District of Columbia and/or Maryland
  • Women’s health/family planning experience is preferred, HIV experience or willingness to learn HIV care is highly desirable (for non-pediatricians).
  • Bilingual, Spanish-English
  • Must be willing to accept “on call” duties on a regular rotation
  • Must have a current DEA number

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with LGBTQ populations
  • Two years prior work in a Latino community
  • MS office or equivalent computer experience; experience with use of electronic health records

Duties & Responsibilities:

Clinical:

  • Provides primary medical care for a dedicated panel of patients, including diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness according to evidence-based standards.
  • Obtains clinical histories, conducts appropriate physical examinations and assessments, orders diagnostic testing and formulates treatment plans
  • Conducts routine health examinations and evaluations and makes recommendations for preventive health maintenance and screening tests as appropriate.
  • Documents appropriate clinical information in the electronic health record in a timely manner, completing documentation and billing for clinical encounters within 48 hours.
  • Reviews documents including outside records and consultant reports and summarizes information in the medical record.
  • Determines need for additional services including but not limited nursing, social services, health education, and referral for specialty care.
  • Participates in regular multidisciplinary clinical team meetings and assists in the coordination of care in a team-based setting.
  • Orders and is responsible for the dispensing and administration of certain medications on-site.
  • Delivers emergency care during clinic hours and is available to La Clínica del Pueblo patients for urgent clinical advice after hours, on a rotating basis.
  • Refers patients to hospitals for emergency care and admission when needed and communicates with hospital staff as appropriate.

Teaching & Training

  • Aids in the administration of medical programs including the direction, integration, coordination, and evaluation of training activities for medical and other health professions students and medical residents. Gives guidance to nurses and midlevel practitioners.
  • Participates in continuing education and in-service programs including conferences relating to patient care.
  • Participates in training to enhance ability to care for specific populations and conditions, as directed by supervisor.

Works Closely with:

  • Works closely with the site Medical Director, other physicians and midlevel practitioners, nurses, medical assistants and other La Clínica del Pueblo staff, patients, and other healthcare agencies and providers as appropriate.
  • Assists the medical leadership in the development of clinical protocols as directed by supervisor.
  • Participates in clinical quality improvement and risk management activities in collaboration with the clinical team.
  • Shares after-hours phone coverage for patient emergencies
  • Performs other medically related services as required.
  • Meets monthly with clinical supervisor to report and review your work plan.
  • Represents the organization to the public, official organizations, and other groups by attending conferences, meetings, etc., as designated by supervisor and as related to work duties.
  • Supervises assigned volunteer staff.
  • Performs other activities as identified by supervisor.

Performance Evaluation: To be performed at the end of the 90-day probationary period, at the completion of the 1st 12 months of employment and annually thereafter. The evaluation criteria are attached.
