The Medical Director of Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (TCT) programs shall lead all aspects of the Transplantation and cellular therapy program including education, and research across the Midwest region (Illinois and Wisconsin).

Summary:
The Medical Director of Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (TCT)programs shall lead all aspects of the Transplantation and cellular therapy program including education, and research across the Midwest region (Illinois and Wisconsin). The Medical Director will report to the Vice President of the Cancer Service Line. Anticipated institutional collaborative efforts for advancing the TCT will include efforts with the Hematology-Oncology Medical Directors, Regenerative Medicine Program Director, and the Quality Director, as well as members of other facility leadership teams, to design and execute strategic initiatives. The TCT Medical Director will serve as the Program Director for hematopoietic cellular therapy in accordance with FACT-JACIE Standards. Additionally, Advocate-Aurora Health recently merged with Atrium Health (based in NC) to become Advocate Health. This recent merger will expand collaborative opportunities between the 4 FACT accredited programs of Advocate Health (the 2 led by this position) and 2 in NC (Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center (Winston-Salem, NC) & Levine Cancer Institute Charlotte, NC). Additionally, collaborative opportunities through the Wake Forest School of Medicine (the academic core of Advocate Health) including adjunct faculty appointments and membership in the NCI Comprehensive Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Cancer Center will enrich this opportunity further.

Responsibilities:
The position is comprised of the following components: Clinical operations (ambulatory and inpatient service), quality and regulatory compliance, education and physician development, and research. 

Clinical Operations, Quality, Regulatory Compliance Per FACT-JACIE Standards for Hematopoietic Cellular Therapy, Medical Director will oversee the Wisconsin and Illinois TCT programs. They will work with the Hospital Transplant Manager, Hematology-Oncology program, and Cancer Service Line leaders to develop and annually review and approve policies and procedures. They will collaborate with Service Line Leadership to inform the strategic evaluation of BMT and cellular therapy services and technology across the regions. They will be responsible for leading the programs to achieving and sustaining Center of Excellence designation with national payors. They will actively participate in the development and execution of strategies for focused program areas of excellence and growth, and to allocate program-specific resources, including: 

• Active management of the clinical program, including quality management, selection and care of recipients and donors, and cell collection and processing. Focus on achieving and maintaining national quality measures is a major focus as well as assuring Center of Excellence status with external payers.
• Oversight of the medical care provided by members of the clinical program, including verification of the knowledge and skills of members.
• Maintain FACT accreditation of programs in Illinois and Wisconsin
• Supports multidisciplinary care by leading multidisciplinary rounds at least three times per week.
• Responsible for medical oversight of the inpatient transplant nursing unit to assure optimal coordination between the nursing and the physician staff by leading multidisciplinary medical rounds, being available for nursing questions, and serving as an interface between physicians and nursing staff concerning patient care matters, including patient loyalty and caregiver engagement.  Assists nursing supervisors in nurse retention.
• Ensures proper and complete documentation to meet patient care, medical, legal, and reimbursement requirements.
• Ensures timely delivery of professional services consistent with Advocate Health and professional standards.
• Serves as a trusted and respectful resource to referring physicians to ensure their satisfaction with transplant, cellular therapy, nursing care, and overall patient experience. 
• Participates in the resolution of patient, staff, and physician feedback regarding TCT services, and works cooperatively with the hospitals in their investigation.
• Functions as Medical Director for all activities in the apheresis unit(s) and ensures compliance with pheresis guidelines.
• Co-Chairs Multidisciplinary Hematology videoconference and clinic.

Research. Medical Director will work with the BMT clinicians and AAH Research Institute (AARI) to ensure a broad portfolio of research, including translational research studies and clinical trials, selecting, and opening local and national trials. Opens at least one clinical protocol each year. Submits local trials for IRB review and approval, with local trials approved by the program and Vice President for Research & Academic Relations. Clinical trials will include institutional investigator-initiated studies, as well as those sponsored by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to ensure active participation in the BMT Clinical Trials Network and other cooperative groups. Ongoing commitment to maintaining institutional data base and registry will assure ongoing clinical research efforts. Cooperative group and support includes:

Operations and Growth Medical Director will work with the Hospital Transplant Manager, Hematology-Oncology program, and Cancer Service Line leaders to develop and annually review and approve policies and procedures. Collaborates with Service Line Leadership to inform the strategic evaluation of TCT services and technology across the regions. Actively participates in the development and execution of strategies for focused program areas of excellence and growth, and to allocate program-specific resources, including: 

1.    Clinician recruitment, retention, and team expansion
2.    Service Line strategic planning
3.    Marketing, educational talks, referrer, and community outreach
4.    CIBMTR registry
5.    Grows internal and external referrals to reduce outmigration to other centers. 

Education and Clinician Development. Medical Director will work with other TCT team physicians to provide orientation and continuing education for all program members, including physicians and APCs, fellows and residents, nursing, and pharmacy. The Medical Director will meet with individual clinicians to monitor and support their professional development and advancement.  The Medical Director will actively recruit clinicians to support the clinical and research programs, and will engage in clinicians recruitment, retention, and development opportunities, including.  

1.    Annual clinician reviews
2.    APC leadership meetings
3.    Internal and external educational conferences
4.    Assure FACT annual educational targets are met
5.    Provide a minimum of four nursing educational programs annually
6.    Conduct annual transplant physician reviews
7.    Attend APC leadership meetings

9.    Ensure FACT annual educational targets are met/exceeded

Required Qualifications

• MD or DO
• Licensed to practice medicine in Illinois and Wisconsin
• Board certified in Hematology 
• Experienced senior or mid-level faculty with > 10 years of experience in the field of BMT and cellular therapies
• Proven track record as a clinical research investigator 

Preferred Qualifications and Skills

• Proven success working with multi-disciplinary teams, history of training focused on the care of patients with hematologic malignancies and success in obtaining extramural funds for clinical trials and/or basic science research.
• Ability to work with teams composed of a diverse workforce of investigators and research staff
• Track record for mentorship of junior investigators
• Requires excellent oral and written communication skills.  Ability to effectively collaborate with and establish/build relationships with others.  Acts as a representative for Advocate Health in a positive professional manner.
• Ability to work with donors seeking to support innovative care, research, and the next generation of clinicians. 
• Funding as an independent investigator
