Metal Builder Erector II

Position Description:

This position is entry level, performing physically demanding and high-risk work, often working at great heights, outdoors in all weather conditions at construction projects. Metal Builder Erectors are responsible for helping shake out structural steel in order to erect metal structures, walls, and roofs.  As a result, they must wear safety harnesses to reduce the risk of falling anytime while operating any personal lift or while on any unprotected roof surface or deck.

Essential Job Functions:

1.     Introductory knowledge of methods in general construction practices, and the proper utilization and care of tools, materials, and equipment used in PEMB.

2.     Introductory knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the PEMB trade. Must know and follow safety rules following orientation.

3.     Ensures that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are accurately followed.

4.     Attend “Tool Box” morning meetings and participate in employer offered training opportunities.

5.     Ability to work at heights of 30 feet or greater.

6.     Ability to read tape measure utilizing fractional inches.

7.     Ability to handle a tag line. 

8.     Ability to operate a boom lift, and scissor lift.

9.     Be familiar with and can use Assembler tools.

10.  Safely operate or tend equipment and machines used in Metal Building Assembly.

11.  Follow plans and instructions from supervisors.

12.  Must be a cooperative team player, willing learner, and works well with supervisor.

13.  Work occasional evenings or weekends.

14.  Punctual, dependable, and prepared for work each day.

15.  Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. Qualifications and Skills:

Limited or no previous experience is required. High school classes in mathematics, blueprint reading, welding, and other vocational subjects would be helpful for this position.

OSHA 10 certification within 10 days of position acceptance.

Must be 18 years or older.

Must be a willing learner.

Thorough understanding of safety rules.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Demonstrate good time management skills.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, consumers, and other service providers. Must be a cooperative team player.

Ability to work well with comprehensive supervision.

Balance-Erectors often walk on narrow beams, so a good sense of balance is necessary.

Depth perception-Erectors must be able to judge distance between objects and themselves in order to work safely. 

Hand and-eye coordination skill.

Unafraid of heights-Erectors must not be afraid to work at great heights, sometimes walking on narrow beams.

Math skills-Erectors need to perform basic math calculations while measuring.

Mechanical skills-Erectors are frequently required to operate and maintain equipment.

Supervisory Responsibility:

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical/Environmental Demands:

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  The position routinely and repetitively lifts heavy objects up to 50 pounds to waist height and up to 25 pounds to heights above your head. Employee must walk and stand for long periods of time, sometimes working 10 to 12 hour days while performing strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.  The employee lifts, pushes, pulls, or carries objects that weigh a minimum of 20 pounds; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue.  The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, wrist with hand) and multi-limb coordination.  The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have excellent physical stamina and strength with the ability to use machinery and tools that vibrate, as well as drive a company vehicle or equipment for a full 8-hour day or longer if needed. Movements such as stooping, twisting, bending, reaching, crouching, and handling are required. Climbing a minimum of 6 feet on a ladder or scaffolding, with the ability and willingness to work at levels 120 feet above ground is required.  Audio, visual, and verbal functions are vital aspects to performing this position.

1.     Physical stamina-Must have physical endurance because they spend many hours performing physically demanding tasks.

2.     Physical strength-Must be strong enough to guide heavy beams into place and tighten bolts.

Environmental Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes of airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites.  The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.  The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, cold temperature, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
