Job Description
NATURE OF WORK
Under general supervision, performs skilled work in the operation of trucks and equipment used in the maintenance of County roads in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Operates a variety of trucks, equipment, and hand tools in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures; learns to maintain vehicles and equipment according to County standards.
- Performs traffic control and flagging activities as needed; follows safety rules and regulations on all work zone and flagging sites, including placing signs, barricades, traffic cones, and other warning devices; duties may vary according to job assignment.
- Performs basic road repair and maintenance tasks; reports safety hazards and traffic problems.
- Performs manual labor assignments as needed, including accident and hazardous materials cleanup, guardrail and foliage maintenance, and snow and debris removal.
- Responds to emergencies as directed and performs tasks in the interest of public safety and property protection during emergencies.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is performed in and around County roads, highways, and infrastructure and involves regular exposure to variable weather conditions, moving traffic, hazardous materials and chemicals, and machinery with moving parts; subject to standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, crouching, operating equipment, and lifting of objects up to 75 pounds.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
This is the entry level position in the Driver / Operator series. High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. No prior experience is required; prior construction experience is preferred.
A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License is required. May require Traffic Control Flagger Card; may be required to complete First Aid/AED/CPR training programs. Additional certifications may be required.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Knowledge of:
- Learning traffic laws and regulations involved in truck and equipment operations.
- Learning techniques of traffic control.
- OSHA safety rules and regulations and safety standards involving hazardous traffic environments.
Skills in:
- Learning the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of trucks and equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
- Learning proper use of traffic signing for road maintenance and flagging procedures.
- Learning safe work practices.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers
- Communicating effectively and following verbal and written instructions.
