The U.S. Army offers the opportunity to immediately train and work in an in-demand career field while earning a competitive salary and fringe benefits, including healthcare, housing allowance, and money for college.

The U.S. Army is one of the most diverse career training institutions in the United States, with support for thousands of jobs in more than 150 career fields. Through the Army Medical Department alone, a Soldier could train to become a family doctor, a dentist, a nurse, a veterinarian, or a surgeon among a plethora of other medical specialties. Is your son or daughter interested in law, computer programming, logistics, public affairs, aviation, or financial managing? The Army provides training for all of those careers and many, many more

Just like a civilian college degree program, job placement in the U.S. Army is determined by how well a potential recruit has performed in school.  This is determined through a standardized test called the

The ASVAB tests recruits in 10 subject areas: general science, arithmetic reasoning, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, mathematics, electronics, auto shop information practices, mechanical comprehension, and assembling objects. A recruit’s performance on the test will help the Army determine which Military Occupational Specialties (MOS) he or she would be best suited to perform.

MOS placement is also determined by several other factors, including:

  • Current and anticipated needs of the Army
  • Career aspirations
  • Skills and qualifications
Benefits:

There are many career benefits in joining the U.S. Army. These benefits include:

1. Skills and training

The U.S. Army is one of the best places in the world to learn skills that matter in real life and also applies to the workplace. They are known not only to be a highly disciplined organization but they know how to ingrain such attributes into their soldiers. Valuable skills that apply to the workplace are taught in the U.S. Army. One of the biggest skills the military is known to instill in their soldiers is discipline.

Discipline is the ability to follow instructions while carrying out an assignment. This is a skill needed in the workplace for effective delivery of job assignments. Another notable skill is teamwork; in the U.S. Army, soldiers understand that the life of each team member depends on how well each person delivers their part of the job assignment. Other skills learned in the U.S. Army include precision, accountability, leadership and communication skills.

2. Remuneration

The remuneration, or take-home pay, of U.S. Army personnel is often misunderstood because people focus on basic pay. Most people who don't understand how the pay is structured think it's a low-paying job. In the U.S. Army, the pay structure is different. There are components of the pay that aren't obvious to one's eyes. Remuneration in the U.S. Army is divided into four different types:

Basic pay: For active-duty soldiers.

Drill pay: For U.S. Army reserve.

Allowances: For active-duty soldiers, it covers the cost of living, food, clothing, moving allowance and family separation allowance.

Bonuses: Reserve and active-duty U.S. Army personnel earn these bonuses when they train for specific skill sets as determined by the U.S. Army. Some skill sets include infantryman, cannon crew member and fire control specialist.

The total compensation of U.S. Army personnel, when compared to that of a civilian worker of the same qualifications, is higher.

3. Educational benefits

One of the most crucial benefits of joining the U.S. Army is the opportunity to go to school without the crushing debt burden of student loans. According to a 2018 Pew research, one-third of adult Americans under the age of 30 have a student loan debt. Joining the U.S. Army could be a way to fulfill your need to attend college with no debt burden. The U.S. Army has benefits that support any college degree you want. There are four ways you can fund your education while in the U.S. Army. They are:

GI Bill

Available to U.S. Army soldiers who want to attend college, trade school or technical school. In most cases, soldiers receive full tuition for their programs. A soldier qualifies for 100% full tuition if they spend 36 months in the U.S. Army.

Financial aid

There are various financial aids you can receive besides the GI Bill. They apply to those who are in active service, reserve or the National Guard. Under the financial aid option, you are eligible for cancellation of student loans, tuition reimbursement and military spouse educational benefits.

ROTC

Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) is an organization that offers scholarships to students who want to join the U.S. Army as an officer. You get scholarships that pay for your education in return for eight years of service commitment upon graduation.

Postgraduate scholarships

The U.S. Army offers graduate-level scholarships to people who want to study law, medicine or enter seminary school. Scholarships like the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) cover medical students while the Funded Legal Education Program (FLEP) takes care of those who want to study law. It is fully funded.

4. Leadership opportunities

Another significant benefit of joining the U.S. Army is the opportunity for leadership. The U.S. Army thrives on order and leadership. People who join the U.S. Army are trained to lead because the success of their mission depends on their leadership skills. There are lots of opportunities to lead others as you grow in rank in the U.S. Army. Leadership skills are required in the workplace because the workplace thrives where there are great leaders. Leadership in the workplace is valuable and is a key skill that is learned in the U.S. Army.

5. Retirement benefits

The U.S. Army is one of the remaining institutions in the world where retirees still get their pension benefits. After 20 years of active service, you are eligible for pension benefits that are up to 50% of your salary for life. The U.S. Army adjusts the pension for inflation with time. The other retirement benefit that accrues to a person serving in the U.S. Army is the 401k type of savings available to soldiers through the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP). U.S. Army personnel get to save a portion of their pay before they retire. The federal government sponsors it and offers the same incentives and tax benefits that other corporate employers offer.

6. Medical coverage

The U.S. Army has an extensive healthcare plan that is like the Health Management Organization (HMO) way available to military families. The coverage is extensive enough to cover both health care and dental costs at little or no cost to the families. Military families get their care at health care facilities at the military base. The hospitals are well equipped with U.S. Army staff who serve as health care professionals.

7. Homeownership

As someone who is serving in the U.S. Army, you have a great advantage over the civilian because you can get a VA loan, which enables you to own a home with zero down payment. A VA loan is a mortgage offered by private lenders but partially backed by the Department of Veterans Affairs Office. VA loans have one of the lowest rates available as compared to traditional mortgage lending rates. VA loans are available to active-duty soldiers who have served for six months. A reserve soldier can apply after six years of service unless they are called up for active service. They must have completed 181 days of active service before they are eligible to apply.
