Mechanical Assembly Technician

MECHANICAL ASSEMBLY TECHNICIAN 

Responsible for the mechanical assembly of mechanical and electromechanical machines and large manufacturing production-line systems.  This job may involve periodic assistance with installation of the machines and plant systems in the customer’s facility.

Essential Functions

1. Responsible for following verbal instructions, design drawings and bills of material (BOM) to assemble the automated machines and systems in our factory prior to shipment
2. Gather materials and components from various stock locations according to the BOM
3. Assembly of various small dia. piping, tubing, hydraulic hoses and fittings to devices typically on machines such as pumps, valves, instruments, hydraulic power units, heat exchangers, and pneumatic devices. Bolted assembly of light steel beams and other small structures.
4. Experienced technicians will crimp high pressure hoses, bend tubing, and thread piping
5. Painting experience is a plus, but not required. Hand touch-up painting is required.
6. Work with cranes, forklifts or other lifting devices to move heavier components onto the machine frames and mount such devices by drilling, tapping or other fastening methods
7. Must be capable of using wrenches up to 2” size; pipe wrenches up to 36” length
8. Travel to jobs-sites in the US/Canada/Mexico dependent upon experience level
9. Understanding and ensuring compliance with the plant health and safety regulations.
10. Use power tools such as saws, drill press, hand drills, grinders, sanders, impact wrenches
11. Ability to fully understand dimensions on drawings and tape measures and ability to add and subtract dimensions when finding locations of points on machines in fabrication
12. Assembly of floor stands, piping spools, and wire tray for temporary set-ups
13. Can do basic carpentry for bracing machinery for shipment using wood planks or studs

Competencies

1. Understands basic piping hardware and comprehends basic mechanics
2. Proficient with hand tools and measuring methods
3. Can physically exert up to 100lbs force for tightening fasteners or pipe fittings
4. Must possess a valid Driver’s license
5. Ability to work in small teams, take instructions, and communicate effectively
6. Solid attendance record
7. Ability to read drawings, identify and mark-up errors and perform basic math

Work Environment

This job operates in a heated factory environment. This role routinely requires working from standing, seated, and lying positions, and walking several hundred feet/day. The employee will occasionally work from heights on ladders or scissors lifts. The noise level in the work environment can be loud at times.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is largely an active role; however, fine motor skills are required on many tasks.

Travel

 This position may require up to 20% travel, but is voluntary. Travel includes weekends and holidays.

Required Education and Experience

 Experience with hydraulics, piping, pneumatics, and electric motor driven systems. The assembly technician will need to learn the essential functions outlined previously within an 18-month period.
